Job Overview
- The Machine Technician is responsible for installing, inspecting, adjusting and repairing equipment while following the company’s safety rules and regulations. You will be required to maintain all equipment to the required standards and be responsive to production needs and equipment failures.
- You work as part of a team but would routinely perform work independently and maintain a high level of accuracy and safety whilst performing your duties
- Ensure that all requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety act are met for the ITL KZN site
- Responsible GMR2.1 for the ITL KZN Site
- Your area of responsibility is the entire KZN factory site situated in Mount Edgecombe, Durban, KZN
Key Responsibilities
- Visually inspecting and examining machinery, site and equipment on a frequent basis to detect and eliminate irregularities and malfunctions
- Performing electrical isolations prior to commencing work on machinery or circuitry
- Ensuring that machinery, site and equipment are operating to the required standard and that production meets the minimum standards required by the customer
- Ensuring that output efficiency is consistently at the agreed target levels whilst maintaining an acceptable quality standard
- Ability to apply machine fault finding and troubleshooting methods to identify and eliminate any underlying technical, human, or process flaws behind equipment failures
- Ensuring that machine and equipment breakdowns are reported and resolved as quickly as possible
- Ensuring that the required repairs and maintenance are carried out in the correct priority and that any projects initiated are completed in the agreed time frame
- Adjusting machinery and repairing or replacing defective parts
- Operating machine tools to fabricate parts required during overhaul, maintenance or set-up of machinery
- Ensuring operating safety devices function properly at all times, especially on completion of repairs, modifications and installations
- Installing stationary machinery and mechanical equipment according to layout plans using hand and power tools
- Reading and executing process instructions that appear in SOP, Works Instruction or received verbally regarding machine setup and repair requirements
- Reading diagrams and schematic drawings to determine work procedures
- Sharpening and maintaining machine tools and equipment using a grinder or polishing equipment
- Managing the routine and preventative maintenance program for all equipment to ensure continuous improvement of all machines
- Keeping detailed and accurate maintenance reports and documentation
- Cleaning, lubricating and performing other routine maintenance work on machines
- Adhering to workplace safety policies, regulations and compliances and developing a working knowledge of the safety standards on all machines
- Implementing agreed actions required resulting from risk and insurance surveys
- Active member of the ITL KZN Health & Safety Committee
- Maintaining a clean and environmentally safe work area and workshop
- Housekeeping standards should be kept at a very high level in all areas under your control
- Ensure that operators are well trained in the process and safety aspects of the equipment they are employed to operate
- Appropriate safety equipment must be issued to employees and the wearing of equipment enforced
- Assist and support Production Managers with the implementation of production processes and procedures, productivity improvements and project-based activities based on the information gathered from the production and waste statistics
- Ensuring that critical spares are available at all times and that the monthly stock take of spares is completed and all variances are communicated with the KZN General Manager
- Ordering of parts and equipment from third party suppliers, processing of POs and ensuring timely delivery of orders
Qualifications & Experience
- Grade 12/National Senior Certificate is compulsory
- Minimum N3 Engineering Studies qualification
- Fitter & Turner Red Seal Trade Certificate would be advantageous
- Minimum 3 years post trade experience
- Energetic, proactive, and ability to work under pressure
- A valid driver’s license with own transport preferable
- Proficient computer and analytical skills
- Communicates well with good written and verbal skills, fluent in English
- Experience in the textile manufacturing industries would be advantageous
Reporting & General
- Reports directly to General Manager – KZN
- Functional and Technical assistance from ITL SA Operations Director and Site & Technical Manager
