Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Horticulturist / Landscaper to lead and oversee landscape maintenance, horticultural operations, and landscape development projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring high horticultural standards, managing staff and contractors, implementing sustainable landscape practices, and maintaining aesthetically pleasing and environmentally responsible landscapes.
The Senior Horticulturist / Landscaper will report directly to the Horticulture Manager and will support the planning, implementation, and monitoring of horticultural and landscape programmes. The incumbent will also be responsible for supervising horticultural staff, gardeners, and contractors to ensure the effective delivery of departmental objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, implement, and supervise landscape maintenance programmes.
- Develop and manage indigenous and water-wise planting schemes.
- Oversee planting, pruning, irrigation, fertilisation, pest and disease management.
- Conduct site inspections and prepare maintenance reports.
- Manage horticultural teams and provide technical guidance and training.
- Monitor plant health and recommend corrective actions where necessary.
- Coordinate landscape installation and rehabilitation projects.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Prepare budgets and manage horticultural resources effectively.
- Liaise with clients, suppliers, contractors, and stakeholders.
- Provide regular updates and reports to the Horticulture Manager on landscape operations, project progress, and maintenance activities.
Minimum Requirements
- National Diploma or Degree in Horticulture, Landscape Technology, Environmental Management, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in horticulture, landscaping, or grounds management.
- Strong knowledge of indigenous South African plants and sustainable landscape practices.
- Experience in staff supervision and project management.
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office.
- Valid driver's licence.
Preferred Requirements
- Experience in large commercial, municipal, hospitality, estate, or conservation landscapes.
- Knowledge of irrigation systems and landscape design principles.
- Experience in contract management and budgeting.
