Chimerical Technology is a multidisciplinary engineering company specialised in the design, development, fabrication, and optimisation of industrial membrane and hydrometallurgical technologies for water, uranium, copper, cobalt, rare earth elements (REEs), and other chemical and mining operations. Chimerical Technology’s core expertise lies in reagent recovery, metals concentration and purification, and water decontamination.
Position: Mechanical Draughtsman (Full Time)
Location: Somerset West, Cape Town (In Office)
Reporting to: Mechanical Engineer & Mechanical Manager
Experience required: Minimum 3–5 years relevant mechanical draughting experience in industrial, process plant, piping, fabrication, or similar engineering environments
Contract: 12 (Twelve) months fixed term, with potential for permanent placement. The appointment will include a probationary period with clearly defined performance expectations.
Job Summary:
- This role is responsible for developing accurate 3D CAD models, fabrication drawings, piping layouts, isometrics, equipment layouts, Bills of Materials, and related mechanical design documentation for multidisciplinary process plant projects.
- The successful candidate must be capable of converting engineering concepts, P&IDs, site information, and mark-ups into practical, accurate, fabrication-ready drawing packages. This role requires strong CAD capability, attention to detail, practical fabrication awareness, and the ability to work closely with engineers, fabricators, procurement, and project teams.
- The ideal candidate will have experience in mechanical and piping draughting for industrial or process environments, with strong proficiency in SolidWorks or Inventor, AutoCAD, and preferably AutoCAD Plant 3D. Candidates must be comfortable working in a small, high-performance engineering team where accuracy, ownership, responsiveness, and practical problem-solving are essential.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Mechanical Draughting & 3D Modelling:
- Develop detailed 3D CAD models for process skids, piping systems, equipment layouts, frames, support structures, tanks, and mechanical assemblies
- Produce fabrication drawings, general arrangement drawings, weld details, piping drawings, and mechanical detail drawings
- Generate piping isometrics, spool drawings, support details, and fabrication packages where required
- Create and update 2D drawings from 3D models, P&IDs, sketches, redlines, and engineering mark-ups
- Develop plant layouts, skid layouts, site arrangements, access layouts, and equipment positioning drawings
- Prepare and maintain accurate drawing registers, drawing revisions, and controlled design documentation
- Produce clear and practical drawings suitable for fabricator submission and workshop execution
Piping, Process & Fabrication Support:
- Interpret P&IDs and translate process requirements into practical piping layouts and mechanical arrangements
- Route piping in accordance with P&IDs, equipment layouts, valve access requirements, maintenance access, and fabrication constraints
- Assist with development and checking of line lists, valve lists, equipment lists, and Bills of Materials
- Support engineers with piping, frame, support, and equipment arrangement design
- Identify design clashes, access issues, fabrication constraints, and layout discrepancies before drawings are released
- Assist with “as-built” drawings based on site modifications, fabrication changes, and final installed systems
- Support procurement and fabrication teams with drawing clarifications, material take-offs, and technical queries
Documentation, Quality & Coordination:
- Maintain accurate CAD files, drawings, models, BOMs, and revision control
- Ensure drawings are clear, complete, practical, and aligned with internal drafting standards
- Coordinate with engineers, project managers, procurement, fabrication teams, and external suppliers
- Assist with checking drawings for dimensional accuracy, completeness, constructability, and consistency with design requirements
- Support project documentation, drawing packs, databooks, and handover documentation where required
- Contribute to continuous improvement of CAD standards, drawing templates, workflows, and internal design processes
Required Skills & Knowledge:
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks or Inventor is essential
- Strong proficiency in AutoCAD is essential
- Experience with AutoCAD Plant 3D P&ID development is highly advantageous
- Proven experience as a Mechanical Draughtsman or CAD Draughtsman in an engineering, fabrication, piping, or process plant environment
- Ability to interpret P&IDs, mechanical drawings, fabrication drawings, and engineering mark-ups
- Experience producing fabrication drawings, weld details, piping layouts, isometrics, and Bills of Materials
- Understanding of piping systems, valves, pumps, tanks, frames, supports, and mechanical assemblies
- Practical understanding of fabrication, welding, workshop constraints, and installation requirements
- Strong understanding of drawing standards, tolerances, dimensions, revisions, and document control
- Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and general document management
- Ability to communicate clearly through drawings, schematics, mark-ups, reports, and technical discussions
- Strong problem-solving ability and willingness to resolve design issues practically
- High attention to detail and a strong commitment to accuracy
- Self-motivated, organised, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision
- Hands-on practical ability and willingness to engage with fabrication, assembly, and site-related matters where required
Required Education & Qualifications:
- Matric Required
- Minimum N4 Mechanical qualification, draughting qualification, or equivalent relevant technical qualification
- Minimum 3–5 years relevant mechanical draughting experience
- Valid driver’s license
- Experience in industrial, process plant, piping, mining, water treatment, chemical, or fabrication environments will be advantageous

This role is not suitable for candidates who:
- Require close supervision or highly structured working environments
- Are only comfortable with basic 2D draughting and lack practical 3D modelling experience
- Lack experience in mechanical, piping, fabrication, or process plant environments
- Are not comfortable taking ownership of drawings, models, revisions, and deliverables
- Do not have strong attention to detail or struggle with drawing accuracy and revision control
- Are not comfortable working in a fast-paced, small-team engineering environment
- Are unwilling to work full-time from the Somerset West office
