Role Purpose

The Head: Innovation is a strategically critical role responsible for shaping, leading and embedding the innovation agenda for the Systematic Strategies business within Momentum Investments. The role exists to accelerate the build-out of a differentiated, scalable and future-fit systematic investment capability by identifying, prioritising and converting high-value innovation opportunities into practical investment, data, product, technology and operating model outcomes.

Working closely with the CIO: Systematic Strategies, the incumbent will play a central role in translating strategic ambition into executable innovation initiatives that improve investment insight, enhance client outcomes, enable commercial growth and strengthen Momentum Investments’ competitive positioning in systematic and quantitative investing.

This role is expected to bridge investment strategy, innovation, artificial intelligence, data science, technology enablement, product thinking and disciplined execution. The successful incumbent will bring structure to ambiguity, create momentum across stakeholders, and help build the mechanisms required to move ideas from concept to proof-of-value, and ultimately into scalable business-as-usual implementation.The role is not purely conceptual or research-oriented. It requires a senior innovation leader who can combine strategic foresight with execution rigour, commercial judgement, governance discipline and strong stakeholder influence.

Requirements

Minimum qualifications

Postgraduate qualification in Finance, Investments, Quantitative Finance, Data Science, Business Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Innovation Management or a related field.

Preferred qualifications

Master’s degree or equivalent advanced qualification.

CFA, CQF, FRM, CAIA, MBA or similar professional qualification would be advantageous.

Certifications or demonstrable learning in AI, data science, innovation, agile delivery, design thinking or digital transformation would be beneficial.

Experience

8 to 12 years’ relevant experience in innovation, strategy, quantitative investing, investment transformation, data science, digital enablement, product development or management consulting.

Proven experience leading cross-functional initiatives from idea generation through to implementation and adoption.

Experience operating in asset management, banking, insurance, fintech, investment technology or a similarly complex financial services environment.

Demonstrated exposure to AI, machine learning, advanced analytics, data-driven decision-making or digital transformation.

Experience working with senior executives and specialist technical teams.

Experience in regulated environments with strong governance, risk and control requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

Innovation Strategy and Roadmap Ownership

Define the innovation ambition for Systematic Strategies in partnership with the CIO.

Translate strategic priorities into a practical innovation roadmap with clear focus areas, timelines, milestones and ownership.

Identify where innovation can enhance systematic investment research, strategy development, portfolio construction, risk management, product design, client insight and operating efficiency.

Ensure the roadmap balances strategic ambition with realistic delivery capacity.

Continuously review and refine the roadmap as the business, market, technology and regulatory environment evolves.

Ensure innovation efforts are explicitly linked to business value, client outcomes and investment excellence.

Innovation Portfolio Management

Create a structured innovation intake and prioritisation process.

Assess opportunities based on strategic relevance, commercial potential, feasibility, risk, cost, complexity and expected value.

Maintain visibility of all innovation initiatives across the portfolio.

Track progress, dependencies, risks, decisions and benefits realisation.

Ensure that innovation capacity is focused on the highest-value initiatives.

Recommend which initiatives should be accelerated, paused, re-scoped or stopped.

Provide executive-level reporting on innovation progress and value delivery.

Research-to-Scale Enablement

Develop a structured pathway for moving ideas from discovery to proof-of-concept, validation, implementation and adoption.

Work with quantitative researchers, data scientists, data engineers and investment professionals to convert ideas into practical business or investment applications.

Ensure that proof-of-concepts are designed with clear hypotheses, success measures, governance requirements and scalability considerations.

Help determine when an innovation initiative is ready to move into production, further validation or business-as-usual ownership.

Remove execution friction by connecting the right stakeholders, skills, data, platforms and decision forums.

Ensure learnings from experiments are captured and converted into reusable capability.

AI, Data and Advanced Analytics Enablement

Identify practical AI and analytics use cases across investment research, portfolio analytics, risk monitoring, operational efficiency, client insight and knowledge management.

Work with technical specialists to assess feasibility, value, data readiness and implementation risk.

Help prioritise AI and analytics initiatives that have clear relevance to investment outcomes, productivity or business scalability.

Support the disciplined experimentation and evaluation of AI-enabled tools and methods.

Ensure that AI adoption is aligned to responsible AI, data governance, security, model governance and regulatory expectations.

Encourage the use of AI and automation to improve productivity without compromising judgement, accountability or control.

Build organisational understanding of where AI can create value and where human oversight remains essential.

Systematic Strategy and Product Innovation

Identify opportunities to enhance systematic investment processes, factor research, signal development, dynamic hedging, cash-flow optimisation and portfolio construction.

Support the development of differentiated investment propositions that are robust, scalable and commercially relevant.

Partner with investment, product and distribution stakeholders to understand market needs and translate them into innovation opportunities.

Contribute to the assessment of new systematic strategy concepts from both an investment and commercial perspective.

Ensure innovation is guided by client value, investment integrity, risk awareness and implementation practicality.

Support the development of scalable product and solution ideas that strengthen Momentum Investments’ market positioning.

Operating Model and Process Innovation

Identify opportunities to improve speed to insight, reduce manual effort and improve workflow efficiency.

Design improved ways of working across research, modelling, data, technology, risk and implementation teams.

Support the development of scalable operating practices that can grow with the Systematic Strategies franchise.

Improve visibility, coordination and accountability across innovation and research-related initiatives.

Help embed repeatable processes for experimentation, documentation, validation and adoption.

Ensure that operating model improvements support business growth, governance and long-term sustainability.

Governance, Risk and Responsible Innovation

Establish fit-for-purpose governance for innovation initiatives.

Ensure innovation activity is adequately documented, risk assessed and reviewed.

Align innovation practices to model governance, data governance, investment governance, compliance, security and audit expectations.

Ensure that AI and analytics use cases are developed responsibly and transparently.

Support decision-making forums with clear information on value, risk, trade-offs and implementation implications.

Create mechanisms for post-implementation review and benefits tracking.

Ensure innovation does not create unmanaged operational, reputational, regulatory or model risk.

Stakeholder Mobilisation and Change Leadership

Build trusted relationships with the CIO, investment leaders, product teams, distribution, data, technology, risk, compliance and operations.

Translate complex innovation opportunities into clear, practical business language.

Influence stakeholders without relying solely on formal authority.

Facilitate cross-functional problem-solving and decision-making.

Drive adoption of new capabilities, tools and ways of working.

Anticipate and address resistance to change.

Ensure stakeholders understand the purpose, value and implications of innovation initiatives.

Monitor trends in systematic investing, AI, data science, fintech, investment technology, platform innovation and asset management operating models.
