Full Job Description

Position Summary

We are seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Clerk of Works to oversee construction activities and ensure that all works are executed in accordance with the approved drawings, specifications, contractual requirements, quality standards, and applicable legislation. The successful candidate will act as the Employer's representative on site, monitoring workmanship, materials, health and safety compliance, and overall progress.

Minimum Qualifications

National Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering, Building, Construction Management, or a related built environment qualification. (advantageous)
Registration with a recognised professional body (advantageous)
Valid Code B driver's licence.
Own reliable transport (required)

Minimum Experience

Minimum 5 years' experience as a Clerk of Works, Site Inspector, Construction Inspector, or Site Supervisor.
Experience on municipal, government, housing, infrastructure, or building projects.
Proven experience working under JBCC, GCC, NEC, or similar forms of contract.
Experience working with consulting engineers, contractors, and local authorities.

Knowledge & Skills

Applicants should demonstrate knowledge of:

Construction methods and building regulations.
South African National Standards (SANS).
Occupational Health and Safety Act and Construction Regulations.
Quality assurance and quality control procedures.
Reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications.
Contract administration principles.
Defect identification and quality inspections.
Progress monitoring and reporting.
Material inspections and workmanship standards.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

Monitoring construction works to ensure compliance with approved drawings and specifications.
Conducting daily site inspections.
Ensuring quality workmanship throughout the project.
Identifying defects and issuing non-conformance reports where necessary.
Monitoring contractor compliance with contractual obligations.
Keeping accurate site records, daily diaries, and photographic evidence.
Verifying completed work prior to payment recommendations.
Monitoring programme progress and reporting delays.
Attending site meetings and preparing inspection reports.
Ensuring compliance with health and safety requirements.
Liaising with contractors, consultants, project managers, and the client.
Reporting any deviations, risks, or contractual issues promptly.
Assisting during practical completion inspections and defects liability inspections.

Advantageous

Preference may be given to candidates with:

Experience on City of Cape Town or other municipal infrastructure projects.
Experience in public housing or social housing developments.
Knowledge of EPWP requirements.
Knowledge of construction quality management systems.
First Aid and Health & Safety training.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Project or similar project management software.
