WSP Africa is growing its Renewable Energy capability across Southern Africa and is looking for an experienced and passionate Renewable Energy Engineer to join our Energy team in Midrand. In this role, you will function as a technical consultant on utility-scale Solar PV, Wind Energy and related renewable energy projects, supporting local, regional and international work where required.
You will contribute across the full project lifecycle, from early-stage technical and economic feasibility through to design review, procurement support, construction monitoring, commissioning support and operational advisory. The role will involve working closely with multidisciplinary teams, clients, lenders, investors, developers and contractors to deliver high-quality technical advisory services across renewable energy projects.
A commitment to registration as a Candidate Engineer with ECSA and obtaining PrEng registration within 1–3 years is required. Existing professional registration with ECSA will be advantageous. The role may require up to 50% travel to client offices, project sites and manufacturers’ premises, including travel within Africa.
Manage and deliver high-quality technical advisory work for utility-scale Solar PV, Wind Energy and related renewable energy projects.
Provide technical input from initial project assessment through to technical and economic feasibility, including integration with other electrical or generating plant where required.
Review overall project designs and recommend technical and design improvements.
Support the preparation and management of technical specifications, bills of materials, tender documentation, tender evaluations and contract negotiations.
Assist with the selection and technical review of Balance of Plant, Operation and Maintenance, EPC and other supply contracts.
Undertake technical due diligence for Solar PV and Wind Energy projects and support sponsors, lenders and investors through the financial close process.
Liaise with legal, financial and technical advisors as part of project development, financing and delivery activities.
Assess project risks, including construction, operational, financial and internal WSP risks, and propose practical mitigation strategies.
Monitor project construction and acceptance activities, including site visits, commissioning supervision and technical reporting.
Interface with multidisciplinary teams across electrical, mechanical, civil and control and instrumentation disciplines.
Prepare technical reports, review documentation and contribute to client-facing deliverables.
Mentor and supervise junior engineers, including reviewing and checking their work outputs where required.
Support and participate in business development activities, including defining sales strategy, identifying target markets and clients, and scoping and pricing services.
Prepare and manage proposals for services such as Due Diligence, Technical Advisory, Owner’s Engineering, Lender’s Technical Advisory and related renewable energy offerings.
Contribute to WSP’s internal governance and bid approval processes.
Build and maintain relationships with existing and new clients through effective client and account management.
Represent WSP professionally in internal and external meetings, maintaining strong relationships with internal divisions, external contractors and clients.
Support growth in South African and regional markets, including Namibia, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Role model SHEQ standards and behaviours consistent with WSP’s health, safety, environmental and quality vision and policies.
Contribute to the identification of SHEQ risks and support processes aimed at achieving Zero Harm.
Promote WSP’s values and ensure a safe working environment is maintained at all times.
BSc Engineering or BTech Engineering qualification in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
Approximately 3–6 years’ postgraduate experience, preferably within the Solar PV and Wind Energy sectors.
Experience in Solar PV technology is required; Wind Energy experience will be highly advantageous.
Experience across the renewable energy project lifecycle, including feasibility, development engineering, construction monitoring, commissioning support and operational inspections.
Knowledge of Solar PV plant design, energy yield assessments, layouts and grid connection interfaces.
Understanding of utility-scale Solar PV applications, including ground-mounted, building-mounted, fixed-tilt, single-axis and multi-axis tracking systems.
Technical advisory experience with investors, project developers, sponsors, lenders or banks.
Exposure to South African renewable energy projects, including REIPPPP experience, will be advantageous.
Regional or international renewable energy project development and delivery experience will be beneficial.
Candidate Engineer registration with ECSA is required; Professional Engineer registration with ECSA will be preferred.
Ability and willingness to travel according to project requirements, including travel within Africa.
Strong technical report writing and communication skills.
Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Good project coordination and project management capability.
Ability to manage time, quality and effort to deliver work within agreed time and cost constraints.
Ability to work under pressure while maintaining high-quality outputs.
