Full Job Description

MAINFRAME Developer:

Design, develop, test, and maintain software applications on the mainframe systems, ensuring high performance and reliability for critical business operations.

Key Responsibilities

Mainframe Developers are responsible for the full software development lifecycle on mainframe systems, including:

Application Development: Design, code, test, and debug applications using mainframe technologies such as COBOL, CICS, JCL, DB2, IMS, and VSAM.
System Maintenance: Troubleshoot, optimize performance, and upgrade existing mainframe applications to ensure stability and efficiency.
Project Collaboration: Work with system analysts, project managers, and other IT professionals to gather requirements, create system specifications, and implement solutions.
Testing and Quality Assurance: Conduct unit, system, regression, integration, and performance testing to ensure software quality.
Documentation and Support: Maintain technical documentation, provide user support, and assist in training end-users.
Implementation Planning: Develop detailed plans for design, build, implementation, and stabilization phases, including disaster recovery planning.
Modernization Initiatives: Participate in migrating legacy systems to newer platforms or integrating mainframe applications with modern technologies.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Technical Skills: Proficiency in COBOL, CICS, JCL, DB2, IMS, VSAM, and mainframe development tools.
Programming and Analytical Skills: Strong coding, debugging, and problem-solving abilities.
Experience: Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience in mainframe development, depending on the role level (junior, senior, or architect).
Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related fields.
Soft Skills: Excellent communication, teamwork, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.
Certifications (Optional): SAS, ITIL, CECRL, CISSP, or other relevant certifications may be preferred.

Work Environment

The role is on site, and the successful candidate will also be required on certain occasions to participate in team meetings or client consultations.
Reporting will be to the Technical Lead Mainframe Developer or Software Development Manager

This role requires a combination of technical expertise, analytical thinking, and collaboration skills to ensure the mainframe systems is operating efficiently and fulfill business requirements.

Pay: R325,00 - R400,00 per hour
