Target

As someone with a good amount of retail experience, the pay for the work you do as a cashier is as good as it gets. I actually felt bad that I was compensated so much for standing behind a counter and ringing people out all day. When it's slow you're expected to straighten up the register area and stand out in the aisle, greeting people and offering to check them out. Nothing too outlandish.
Breaks are mandatory, 15 minutes for 4+ hours, plus 30 minutes unpaid for 6+ and if you work a full 8 hour shift, you get an additional paid 15. You get a 10% discount on all merchandise for working there, the only downside to that is you need to either pay cash or use your Target credit/debit card.
Uniform is super casual, jeans or khakis with either a red shirt, or you can wear any shirt you want (as long as it's not offensive to too revealing) and they'll give you a red vest to wear over it.
Customers were the same as any other job really and just life in general; some were pleasant or friendly to the point you couldn't get rid of them. Some just wanted you to ring them out as quickly as possible with minimal small talk (AKA the best kind of customer). And some were so nasty and demanding you couldn't ring them out fast enough.
My only issue with the job was management was super arrogant. They'd get annoyed sometimes that you couldn't read their mind and know they needed you to stay late or do something outside of your typical duties. Overall, fairly easy job with staff more than willing to help you out when needed.

Target was a great place to work. I gained a ton of friends and valuable work experience. However HR at the company’s main purpose is to protect the stores image lots of stuff is swept under the rug. Employees are made to feel like they have support but ETLs have been coworkers for years and have developed friendships with one another and protect each other even when they are treating employees wrong. The company is more likely to hire outside of the store than to promote from within. Lots of people who had been there for years who had degrees were skipped right over. The company has an internship program that essentially promotes people to Etl’s straight out of college, most of whom have no experience working in retail other than the internship program. The company didn’t used to be like this but the culture shifted somewhere along the lines and stopped favoring the employees on the ground and started favoring “professionals”. Pay is great but raises do not accumulate if the new minimum is raised past your current pay rate none of the previous raises you were given compound on top of that new number meaning brand new employees were making the same as employees who had worked there for years.

I'll start off by saying that the department I work for requires more physical labor than most other positions at Target. I work overnight inbound at my store where we're responsible for unloading trucks, sorting freight, and distributing products to the sales floor (all in the same night before the store opens in the morning). These truck sizes can range from anywhere between 800 case packs (boxes) to well over 2000. I work at a larger volume store and we get 1-2 trucks a night with the holiday season often bringing 3 trucks regularly. The truck unload is by far the hardest part of the job which can take a toll on your body especially doing it for hours on end. It's an unwritten rule at target but you can imagine they won't throw just any inbound team member into the truck to unload. If you're younger, more able bodied, and a male you'll usually be picked to unload the truck. While this happens the less ideal team members for the job will be given less labor intensive tasks such as stocking on the sales floor or sorting freight. The problem with all of this is that everyone is often getting paid the same exact amount of money. Someone unloading trucks for 4 hours shouldn't be getting paid the same amount as another person that just pushes a box down a conveyer line.

Oh and you'll most likely only ever get part time status so you'll never get full time benefits. 
 

The job is dependent on the store make that very very clear. I work at a store where our STL is a joke and they don't value education. I myself am working on a masters degree and have about 6 years of hospitality management overseeing a staff of 50-60 at a time. I wasn't "ETL" ready because I never worked at a Target. The now ETL is fresh out of college and this is her first job ever. She got her job only because she completed a 12 week internship with Target. This is no way makes you ready for the job and she shows it. I now do her job and mine for less pay. I have brought that up several times to the STL and just am told its a waiting game. If you take a job at Target before you are hired fight with HR for what you think is fair money wise, because they will low ball you quickly. Its a okay job once again it is store dependent. I have traveled to other stores for visits, meetings, ect.. and its far far better than my store.

Also if you do a great job in your roll and try to move out of the store they will try to stone wall you from leaving. I commute about one hour each way to my store. I found an opening at a store twenty minutes from my house and was denied without a reason.

In contrast to my previous employer, Target by far exceeds my expectations in leadership, career development and compensation. Target values their team members and knows their worth. Target does not show favoritism and makes everyone feel included. I felt undervalued by my previous employer so being with a company that makes me feel valued is very refreshing.

Target also offers great work life balance and offers great benefits to eligible team members. One of the awesome benefits they offer is a yearly bonus for team leaders. This was never an option at my previous employer so this benefit was a pleasant surprise. This benefit makes team leaders feel empowered to make decisions based on their business and gives them motivation to exceed expectations.

I look forward to growing personally and professionally with Target. 

I want to preface this by saying that I didn't stay here long, and I am writing in hindsight a year later. First things first, they give you virtually no training and throw you out in the ocean and hope you swim. They actually encouraged me to speed up my training because the place that I worked at was so understaffed. That built up a lot of resentment within me for this place, but working as a guest services was even more of a strain. You have to do so much and they move you around all the time to go help order pickup, to working the registers, to monitoring self check out, to handling returns, etc. The first few weeks are going to be you feeling absolutely helpless and always asking how to do this or that. To be fair, I think everyone should work a fast food or retail job just to get an understanding of how hard the work in this industry is and help build a better attitude towards those people that are unfortunate or brave enough to work there. 

Pay and benefits are fantastic.  However, getting those pay and benefits means that you have sold your soul to Target.  A salaried leader at the store level can expect 12-14hr days, always working part of your scheduled vacation, only getting scheduled days off if the business allows it, working ALL major holidays ( being "closed" on Thanksgiving/Christmas only means 12am-11:59pm...aka, you're there at midnight on Thanksgiving night..) etc.  Texting/calls from your Store Director's all hours, even when you're off.
If you're single, or looking to be divorced, then Target is the place for you!  They will take all your time and break you down so far mentally and physically that you will go crazy.  But, like I said, the pay moves quick.  Starts around $55k-doesn't cap till you hit 100k+.  Honestly, not worth it if you value anything outside of work.

I understand the need to change with the times, but when you change everything that makes you stand out from the competition and made you a good place to work, it’s not good. I’ve never seen as many people quitting as I have in the last six months since this modernization idea rolled out. People who have worked for the company for more then 5 years are being pushed out and the management just lies and lies to make it seem like it’s all your fault. Work life balance is a joke. Everybody I work with is currently on medication just to make it through the day. Health for everybody has taken a major down turn. Every week another team member is in the hospital.

The workload that Target puts on one person is astoundingly inhumane. It's understandable to be expected to multitask, but this was an awful extreme. Throughout my time being employed there, they hired fewer and fewer people and combined multiple job roles into one. On more than one occasion, there were guests in the store who would approach me and tell me the way I had been spoken to was inappropriate, something I would be urged to speak with my HR. No one should have to cry on a nightly basis because of their job. Might be great if you're only there for seasonal or if you will have the option to quit before the fire you.

High accountability and expectation, which is good. Generally fair but very reactive to unseen circumstances. Payroll is priority one, regardless of increased workload, freight, or volume. Job always comes before family or personal life, and you are looked down upon when you leave after 12-13 hour days if your boss is still on premise, even if they have only been on site for 6 hours. Many upper level managers were promoted based on relationships as opposed to performance and merit. This can cause issues when there are lower level issues that need basic understanding to troubleshoot.
