Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated Environmental Practitioner with proven success in managing environmental compliance,sustainability, and permitting within the mining sector. The ideal candidate will possess a relevant professional designation, such as Pr.Sci.Nat. (Professional Natural Science) or equivalent registered body. This individual will handle end-to-end duties for the Environmental Management department - including overseeing Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA’s), monitoring Environmental Management Programmes (EMP’s), and ensuring compliance with NEMA and water use licenses - while reporting directly to the Mine Manager (3.1 appointee).
Key Responsibilities
Impact Assessments: Oversee the execution, review, and submission of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIAs) and Environmental Management Programmes (EMPs).
Compliance and Permitting: Ensure total alignment with national environment legislation, managing renewals and compliance for Water Use Licence (WULAs), Atmospheric Emission Licences (AELs), and Waste Management Licences.
Performance Monitoring: Conduct regular site audits, waste management inspections, and water quality monitoring to mitigate environmental risks on site including dust.
Stakeholder Liaison: Act as the primary point of conduct for environmental regulatory bodies (e.g., DMRE, DWS) and facilitate community engagement regarding environmental impacts.
Reporting: Compile and present comprehensive environmental performance and sustainability reports directly to the Mine Manager and executive structures
REQUIREMENTS
Education: A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Geology, or related natural science discipline.
Professional Registration: A valid professional designation with a recognised statutory body, specifically Pr.Sci.Nat (Professional Natural Scientist registered with South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) or EAPASA (Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa) registration.
Minimum Industry Exposure: Proven post qualification experience, 3 - 5+ years of handling environmental duties specifically within open-pit mining operations.
Regulatory Compliance: Hands-on experience dealing with South African environmental legislation frameworks, including NEMA (National Environmental Management Act), the National Water Act, and MPRDA.
EIA and EMP Management: A proven track record of successfully managing, executing and auditing Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Environmental Management Programmes (EMPs).
Risk Management: The ability to identify environmental hazards on-site, evaluate risks, and swiftly implement corrective actions to prevent legal or operational liabilities.
Liaison Skills: Excellent communication skills for interfacing with government departments or regulators such as DMRE and DWS.
Auditing & Reporting: Vast experience in conducting site environmental compliance audits and water monitoring, and writing comprehensive performance reports for senior management.
Must be able to obtain a Certificate of Fitness to work in an active opencast environment.
A valid driver’s license
Must reside within 50 Km radius of Steelport (need to provide POR)
