Provides legal services on complex matters to advance Conservancy priorities and appropriately manage risk.
Provides legal services on complex matters for assigned programs. Ensures that transactions and activities are legally sound and consistent with the Conservancy’s mission, authority, policies, and procedures. Clearly articulates complex legal concepts and options to assigned programs.
This is a hybrid role where the chosen candidate is expected to work at the TNC South Africa office located in in Tokai, Cape Town.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
Assists in structuring activities to most effectively achieve Conservancy goals.
Reviews organizational documents and prepares and examines contracts which may involve government grants, leases, licenses, purchases, sales, insurance, easements, etc.
Influences decision-makers in assigned programs through strong communication skills.
Manages outside counsel effectively.
May supervise and/or provide guidance to less experienced attorneys and/or paralegals and other support staff.
Performs special projects as requested by department management.
Serves as the primary legal contact for clients in Zambia and South Africa and any other geography determined by the department management.
Travel occasionally; work long or flexible hours as needed.

Juris Doctorate or equivalent and license to practice law in South Africa
5 years relevant legal experience or at least 3 years relevant legal experience coupled with assumption of significant responsibilities for a geographic area or subject matter expertise.
Experience negotiating complex, transactions and agreements.
Understanding of legal and regulatory landscape in South Africa
Experience working across cultures.
In-house experience and/or law firm experience advising sophisticated clients and senior management.
Experience developing, directing and managing multiple projects and implementing strategic program goals.
Experience supervising staff such as paralegals and administrative staff
Excellent legal research skills.
Working knowledge of current trends in financing transactions and non-profit law.
This position is based in South Africa where TNC has an established entity, taking into consideration legal restrictions, such as non-national ratios and immigration processing times. Pay ranges will be in local currency, the pay range will be based on the local labor market, and not tied to the above pay range. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment and used to determine your actual pay range. Additionally, for all applicants, actual pay will fall within a range based on a variety of factors including, for example, the candidate’s qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
