Location: Somerset West, South Africa
Job Purpose:
Ensure the accuracy and reliability of aerospace measurement instruments through precise calibration and maintenance.
Responsibilities:
Collaboration and Communication
- Perform spectral and radiometric measurements to ensure all products meet specifications.
Radiometric Calibration & Testing
- Perform pre-launch and in-orbit radiometric calibration of optical and multispectral sensors.

Develop and execute calibration protocols using blackbody sources, integrating spheres, and other standard references.

Maintain calibration records and ensure traceability to international standards (e.g., NIST, ISO).
Characterization
- Capture characterisation datasets used to calibrate the products radiometrically and geometrically.

Collect and analyse data to produce reports and optimised recommendations for cross-functional teams
Data Quality Assurance
- Monitor incoming payload data for radiometric consistency and anomalies.

Apply correction algorithms to raw data to ensure accurate reflectance and radiance values.

Collaborate with data scientists and remote sensing analysts to validate processed data.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain detailed technical documentation, calibration logs, and operational procedures.

Ensure compliance with SANSA, ITU, and other relevant regulatory bodies.

Support audits and reviews related to payload performance and data integrity.
Compliance and Safety
- Ensure all instruments meet set safety and quality standards.

Adhere to safety procedures and guidelines during all processes.
Innovation and learning
- Stay updated with the latest technological advancements and industry standards in remote sensing calibration, photometry, and radiometry

Ability to work as part of a team to solve problems of scientific and technological interest
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree or Advanced Diploma in Physics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Astronomy, Industrial Physics
Required Experience:
- 1 – 3 years of experience in a relevant engineering/ scientific field.

Previous experience in spectral and radiometric measurements.

Previous experience in operating delicate measuring equipment.

Strong understanding of calibration principles.

Windows and MS Office capable

Handling and Adjusting Delicate Instruments: The candidate will be responsible for the precise manipulation and adjustment of sensitive equipment, ensuring optimal performance and accuracy.

Proficiency in Spectroscopy Concepts: Understanding and applying photonics or spectroscopy principles will be essential for tasks involving light-based technologies as we build advanced measurement systems.

Microsoft Office: The candidate must be experienced in Word and performing calculations using formulas in Excel.

Python Software: Proficiency in Python will be a bonus.
Understanding of radiometric principles (e.g., radiance, reflectance, irradiance). -
Proficiency in sensor calibration technique using blackbody sources, integrating spheres, spectrometers, laser and quantum radiometry, spectral band pass filters, and standard lamps.
- Knowledge of traceability standards (e.g., NIST, ISO 17025).

Familiarity with optical payloads and data, including multispectral, hyperspectral, and infrared sensors.

Understanding of sensor response functions, photon transfer, digital numbers, signal-to-noise ratios, conversion of DN values to units of top of atmosphere radiance and reflectance and spectral resolution.

Ability to interpret sensor specifications and performance metrics.

Competence in remote sensing software (e.g., ENVI, QGIS, ERDAS Imagine, SNAP).

Skills in data correction, computer vision, radiometric normalisation, and image quality assessment.

Experience with Python, MATLAB, or IDL for custom data analysis and automation.

Basic knowledge of electronic circuits, signal processing, quantum efficiency, and instrument interfacing.

Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment used in pre-launch characterization, verification and testing.

Understanding of quality control procedures in calibration and testing environments.

Familiarity with space industry standards (e.g., ECSS, ISO, EMVA1288, IEEE, PTB, CEOS).

Ability to document and maintain calibration logs, test reports, and compliance records.
- Training in cleanroom procedures, ESD protection, and safe handling of optical components.

Awareness of radiation safety and non-destructive testing protocols.
