We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Chemical Technician to join our dynamic laboratory and research team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to innovative research, product development, quality control, and metal recovery processes within a fast-paced environment.
The successful candidate will play a critical role in developing and optimizing metal recovery methods, conducting laboratory analyses, supporting product development initiatives, and ensuring compliance with laboratory standards and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Research & Development
Conduct comprehensive literature reviews to stay informed of current developments, methodologies, and innovations within the chemistry and metallurgy fields.
Generate and develop innovative ideas based on research findings and external analyses.
Develop new products through small-scale formulation, pilot plant trials, and full-scale production processes.
Assist in refining and improving existing products to enhance quality, performance, and production efficiency.
Monitor formulation development and provide regular progress updates to management.
Metal Recovery & Process Development
Conduct experiments aimed at recovering metals from alloys using chemical and metallurgical techniques.
Develop, optimize, and improve metal recovery methods to maximize efficiency and yield.
Analyse alloy compositions and material properties using chemical and physical testing methods.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges associated with metal recovery processes.
Collaborate with research teams to develop innovative metal recovery technologies.
Laboratory Analysis & Quality Control
Perform routine and non-routine quality control analyses in accordance with legislative and compliance requirements.
Investigate product failures, non-conformances, and quality issues.
Analyse experimental and production data and compile detailed technical reports.
Maintain accurate records of laboratory procedures, experiments, and results.
Ensure compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards and laboratory quality systems.
Laboratory Operations
Maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including troubleshooting and reporting malfunctions.
Manage laboratory stock control and stock-taking activities.
Ensure adherence to laboratory health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Provide technical support and guidance to team members when required.
Perform additional laboratory-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
BSc Degree or National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry.
Minimum of 3 years’ laboratory experience.
Valid driver’s licence.
Computer literacy.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to work.
Knowledge and practical application of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
Proven ability to establish systems and enforce laboratory compliance will be advantageous.
Must reside in or near the Kempton Park / Benoni area.
Preferred Experience & Skills
Proven experience in metal recovery from alloys within an industrial or research environment.
Strong understanding of chemistry principles and metallurgical processes.
Proficiency in analytical techniques including spectroscopy, chromatography, microscopy, and related laboratory methods.
Strong problem-solving abilities with an innovative and analytical mindset.
Excellent organizational, record-keeping, and documentation skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
Experience operating and maintaining laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
Familiarity with laboratory safety standards and regulatory requirements.
