We are currently looking to employ an experienced Skipper to join our fleet operating out of Saldanha Bay on the West Coast.
POSITION: SKIPPER
REPORTING TO: FAS FLEET MANAGER
PURPOSE: To oversee the operation of the fishing vessel, ensuring the safety of the crew, managing the
fishing activities and navigating the vessel to optimal fishing grounds.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
- SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE WITH LEGAL AUTHORITIES
➢ Total compliance with safe manning, all SAMSA, Maritime OSH, Class regulations
and requirements.
➢ Compliance with Company watch keeping procedures.
➢ Legal Compliance to Fishing Regulations and Permit conditions.
- VESSEL OPERATIONS & EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE
➢ Ensure that all machinery and equipment are maintained and kept in a good
working condition to guarantee continuous and effective operations.
➢ Ensure care and maintenance of fishing gear and equipment.
➢ Ensure that due care is practiced when fishing on hazardous fishing grounds.
➢ Ensure that fishing and production targets as defined are met.
➢ Ensure that defined quality standards are met and maintained.
➢ Vessel operating within allocated budgets.
- CREW MANAGEMENT & TRANSFER OF SKILLS
➢ Ensure that discipline is maintained.
➢ Foster & promote a harmonious working environment
➢ Prioritize the transferring of skills by officers and managers.
QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Fisherman Grade 2 or Skipper Fishing> 24m (Limited Waters)
- Valid SAMSA Medical Certificate (unrestricted)
- Valid STCW documentation
- Proven track record of Hake Bottom Trawling Fishing ability
- Experience as a Freezer Trawler Skipper
- Personnel management and safety awareness
- Fluent in the English language, both spoken and written.
- Able to follow company instructions and procedures
- Ability to motivate
