Position Overview
A consulting and project management company is seeking a competent and experienced Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Superintendent to be deployed at a client site in Rustenburg. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing, coordinating, and overseeing all HSE-related activities, ensuring full legal compliance, effective implementation of management systems, and continuous improvement of health, safety, and environmental performance.
Key ResponsibilitiesHSE Management & Leadership
- Lead and manage the implementation of the Health, Safety and Environmental Management System at the client site.
- Ensure alignment with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) requirements.
- Provide professional HSE leadership, guidance, and support to site management and workforce.
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with company, client, and legal requirements.
Legal Compliance & Governance
- Ensure compliance with:
- Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and applicable Regulations
- Environmental legislation including NEMA and NEMWA
- Client-specific HSE standards and contractual requirements
- Maintain and update the Legal Register and ensure linkage to operational controls.
- Manage statutory appointments (e.g. 16.2, 8(1), supervisors, HSE officers).
- Liaise with inspectors, auditors, and client representatives.
Risk Management & Operational Control
- Oversee and review HIRA, Aspect & Impact Registers, and integrated risk assessments.
- Ensure effective implementation of control measures for high-risk activities.
- Monitor construction, maintenance, plant operation, and contractor activities.
- Review incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective and preventive actions.
Audits, Inspections & Reporting
- Conduct regular site inspections and internal HSE audits.
- Support and coordinate external audits and client inspections.
- Track non-conformances and ensure timely close-out.
- Compile and submit weekly HSE reports and other required performance reports.
Training, Competency & Awareness
- Manage and maintain the company training matrix, ensuring alignment with legal and client requirements.
- Identify training gaps and ensure competency-based training for employees and contractors.
- Facilitate site inductions, toolbox talks, and HSE awareness sessions.
- Monitor training compliance and certification validity.
Incident & Emergency Management
- Oversee incident reporting, investigation, and statutory notifications.
- Ensure emergency preparedness and response plans are implemented and tested.
- Participate in and lead emergency drills and post-incident reviews.
Minimum RequirementsQualifications
- Diploma or Degree in Safety Management, Environmental Management, Engineering, or a related field
- SAMTRAC / COMSOC / NEBOSH or equivalent qualification
- Working knowledge of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 (implementation and application)
- ISO Internal Auditor or Lead Implementer certification (advantage)
- Professional registration with SACPCMP or SAIOSH (advantage)
Experience
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a senior HSE role
- Experience within construction, engineering, mining, or project-based environments
- Proven experience working on client sites
- Strong background in audits, compliance monitoring, and reporting
