The Trailer Technician is responsible for in metal fabrication, welding and trailer repairs to keep trailers in optimal condition.
Duties & Responsibilities
Reading and interpreting technical drawings, specifications and job card instructions. Identifying repairs needs from job card and determining the appropriate materials, parts needed from store and tasks required to complete job card.
Preparing surfaces for welding by cleaning, grinding, and removing rust, paint or oxidation.
Set up components for welding according to specifications, including adjusting the material and thickness for aluminum and other metals (e.g., cut aluminum components to match measurements).
Operate angle grinders, cutting torches, and specialized tools to prepare the parts that must be welded, ensuring the aluminum is free from contaminants.
Align components using calipers, rulers, and clamps to ensure proper placement of both steel and aluminum parts before welding.
Perform welding repairs on trailer frames, cross-members, floors, hitches, and other components, including aluminum sections, ensuring compatibility of the materials being welded.
Weld components using welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal, overhead), with specialized aluminum welding techniques to achieve clean, strong welds.
Repair components by welding pieces and filling gaps, using the appropriate filler material for aluminum if required.
Reinforce weak areas and address structural issues, paying attention to the specific properties of aluminum, such as its heat sensitivity and its ability to warp more easily than steel.
Ensure parts are fitted according to drawing specifications, accounting for material differences between aluminum and steel, ensuring compatibility.
Test and inspect welded surfaces and structures to discover flaws, paying close attention to aluminum welds for proper penetration, cleanliness and strength.
Inspecting trailers to identify structural issues, such as cracks, corrosion, or damage.
Installing and fitting components such as flooring, walls, roofs, curtains, tarps etc. on trailers.
Repairing damaged or worn-out trailer bodies, including structural repairs, panel replacement, and refinishing.
Remove and fit tyers on trailers as needed.
Remove bins from chassis for repairs, this will include disconnecting hoses, unbolt/remove fasteners etc.
After completing all repairs on bins fit back onto chassis.
Utilize Overhead Crane to move around parts/components.
Strip and assembling mechanical components such as but not limited to axles, suspension assemblies, 5th wheels, rubbing plates and wheels.
Cut and join any accident damaged chassis/steel structure to engineering specifications/drawing.
Desired Experience & Qualification
Matric (Essential)
±3 years CO2 & Aluminium Welding
±3 years proven experience body building or repairs
Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings, specifications and job card instructions.
Strong welding skills, including experience with various welding techniques.
Knowledge of metal fabrication tools and equipment, including grinders, cutting torches etc.
Mechanical aptitude and understanding of trailers and components.
This position is a month-to-month contract.
