IS Technology (Asheville, NC) is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to take ownership of our core platform — a system that's been running the business for over a decade and needs someone who can drive it forward, not just maintain it. This isn't a ticket-closing role. You're accountable for the health of the system: catching what's broken, fixing what's inefficient, and making sure it holds up as we build on top of it.
You'll inherit a 12-year-old codebase with 14 past contributors, no documentation, and at least one comment reading "don't touch this, it's magic." We need someone who sees that as a solvable problem, not a red flag — someone who can refactor without breaking production, write tests for code that's never had any, and make the pragmatic calls that keep the business running while the system gets better underneath it.
About the Role
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer who isn't going to flinch when they open a 12-year-old codebase with 14 contributors, zero documentation, and a comment that just says "don't touch this, it's magic."
You're the kind of engineer who treats a messy legacy system not as a reason to walk away, but as a puzzle worth untangling. You're comfortable in the trenches — refactoring without breaking production, writing tests around code that has none, and making pragmatic decisions that keep the business running while things slowly get better.
What You'll Be Doing
- Owning features end-to-end in our core platform built on C#, SQL Server, and JavaScript
- Navigating and modernizing legacy systems with minimal documentation
- Writing and reviewing SQL queries, stored procedures, and database schemas in SQL Server
- Building and maintaining server-side C#/.NET services and APIs
- Working with front-end and client-side JavaScript across our product surface
- Writing unit, integration, and regression tests — especially where none existed before
- Partnering with product and ops to scope realistic timelines for thorny problems
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a significant chunk of it in Microsoft technologies
- Strong working knowledge of C# and the .NET ecosystem
- Comfortable reading, writing, and optimizing SQL Server — T-SQL, stored procedures, indexes, execution plans
- Solid JavaScript across multiple contexts (you've seen the good, the bad, and the "we'll figure it out later")
- Source control is non-negotiable. You use it daily, you write clean commits, you resolve conflicts without a white-knuckle grip, and you understand branching strategies. If you need to be reminded what git rebase does, this isn't the role for you.
- You've been the person who was handed a system that "just works" and asked to make it do a new thing — without a map.
- You can read code you didn't write and figure out what it's trying to do, even when it's not doing that well.
Nice to Have
- Experience with .NET Core / .NET 6+ migration work
- Familiarity with TFS/Azure DevOps, Git, or similar source control platforms
- Exposure to SQL Server Agent jobs, SSIS, or other scheduled data work
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines in a Windows/enterprise environment
- A healthy respect for the phrase "it's worked for 8 years, don't touch it" — and the skill to know when it actually does need to be touched
Compensation & Working Conditions
· Salary: R650,000 ZAR annually
