Full Job Description

Job Specification: Safety Officer (SACPCMP Registered)

Location: Various Construction Sites
Reports To: Project Manager / HSE Manager

Job Purpose

To ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993), Construction Regulations, client requirements, and company safety standards. The Safety Officer will promote a strong safety culture, identify and mitigate risks, conduct inspections, and ensure legal compliance across all construction projects. SACPCMP registration is a mandatory requirement for this position.

Minimum Requirements

Grade 12 (Matric).
National Diploma or equivalent qualification in Occupational Health & Safety, Safety Management, or related field.
Valid SAMTRAC, NEBOSH, or equivalent safety qualification.
Registered with the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) as a Construction Health and Safety Officer (CHSO).
Minimum 3–5 years' experience as a Safety Officer in the construction industry.
Strong knowledge of:
Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993)
Construction Regulations 2014
Incident Investigation Procedures
Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification
Valid driver's licence.
Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, Outlook).

Key Responsibilities Health & Safety Compliance

Ensure compliance with all legal and client SHEQ requirements.
Develop, implement, and monitor site-specific Health and Safety Plans.
Maintain and update safety files and statutory documentation.
Conduct regular site inspections and safety audits.
Ensure all employees and subcontractors comply with safety regulations.

Risk Management

Conduct risk assessments and identify workplace hazards.
Recommend corrective and preventative actions.
Monitor implementation of corrective actions.

Training & Awareness

Conduct site inductions for new employees.
Facilitate toolbox talks and safety meetings.
Promote safety awareness and a positive safety culture.

Incident Management

Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses.
Compile incident reports and recommend preventative measures.
Ensure all incidents are reported in accordance with company procedures.

Documentation & Reporting

Maintain records of inspections, incidents, training, and audits.
Submit weekly and monthly HSE reports to management.
Ensure all statutory registers are updated and available.

Contractor Management

Review and approve subcontractor safety files.
Monitor contractor compliance with site safety requirements.
Participate in client and internal safety audits.

Advantageous Qualifications

First Aid Level 1 or higher.
Fire Fighting Certificate.
Incident Investigation Training.
Working at Heights Training.
Fall Protection Planner/Inspector certification.
Environmental Management qualification.

Employment Conditions

Willing to travel and work on various construction sites.
Ability to work overtime and weekends when required.
Medically fit to work on construction projects.

Note: Only candidates with a valid SACPCMP registration as a Construction Health and Safety Officer (CHSO) will be considered.
