About the job

This is a contract remote role for a WordPress & Technical SEO Developer. The individual will be responsible for developing and maintaining WordPress websites, implementing advanced technical SEO strategies, integrating various software and databases, and programming. The role also includes daily tasks of designing or maintaining websites and ensuring optimal site performance through continuous evaluation and optimisation.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DELIVERABLES

WordPress Development & Front-End:

Build, refine, and maintain WordPress sites using clean HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.
Implement responsive layouts, ensure cross-browser and device compatibility, and meet accessibility best practices.
Create light custom theme or child-theme tweaks, template overrides, and small PHP enhancements.
Routinely update WordPress core, themes, and plugins using staging and rollback plans.
Run malware and vulnerability scans, audit users and permissions, and harden logins.
Frequently test critical user paths, for example forms, checkout, search, and logins.
Back up sites before and after updates and verify restore points.
Produce a monthly maintenance report with tasks completed, risks, and recommendations.

Technical SEO:

Optimise images, fonts, and scripts to improve Core Web Vitals.
Monitor and resolve issues that affect LCP, CLS, and INP, use TBT in lab testing to diagnose.
Check error logs, fix broken links and redirects, and review Search Console issues.
Monitor and resolve Search Console coverage, page indexing, enhancements, manual actions, and security.
Validate sitemaps, robots.txt, canonical tags, pagination, parameter handling, and hreflang where relevant.
Review GA4 and GTM implementation at a high level and flag tracking gaps.
Maintain search-friendly migrations, pre-launch checks, staging noindex, parity checks, and post-launch monitoring.
Maintain redirect integrity, 301 mapping for URL changes, remove or 410 retired content, eliminate redirect chains and loops, and fix 404 hotspots.
Review server and application logs to identify crawl errors, spikes, or bot blocks, and coordinate fixes.

Advanced Technical SEO/AI / Schema Implementation:

Page- and element-level JSON-LD: Implement detailed Schema.org markup on WordPress to improve eligibility for rich results and strengthen topical authority.
Key schema types: Product, QAPage with multiple suggested answers, CollectionPage or ItemList, TechArticle, WebApplication, VideoObject, plus site-wide Organization and WebSite markup.
Implementation methods: Use Yoast SEO Premium Additional Schema per URL, or develop lightweight custom plugins or child-theme functions to inject JSON-LD via wp_head.
Content mapping and integration: Map ACF and other content fields to schema, manage schema alongside Yoast or RankMath and WooCommerce without conflicts, ensure correct nesting.
Rigorously tested deliverables: Zero errors in Google Rich Results Test and Schema Markup Validator, no Core Web Vitals regression, verify population in Google Search Console Enhancements.

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

Advanced WordPress Development & Maintenance (including Design/CSS)
5+ years JSON-LD at scale on WordPress
Strong PHP & Theme Development
Advanced WordPress Development
Experience with Multilingual and Hreflang Implementation
WooCommerce Customisation
Advanced schema implementation and nesting (Product, QAPage, ItemList, etc.).
Confident with Google Search Console, Rich Results Test, Schema Markup Validator, Lighthouse, PageSpeed Insights, GA4, and GTM.
Experience with setting up gtags, pixels, and event tracking (Incl. GA4/GTM/MetaPixels etc)
