Full Job Description

Job Summary

TORS GROUP is looking for a qualified and experienced Structural Engineer to support the design, assessment, review, and implementation of structural works for solar photovoltaic projects in South Africa.

The ideal candidate must have proven experience in solar PV projects, including rooftop PV structural assessments, ground-mounted structures, steel structures, mounting systems, foundations, wind loading, and site implementation support.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct structural assessments for rooftop, ground-mounted, carport, and tracker-based solar PV installations.
Review and verify structural designs for PV mounting systems, steel structures, foundations, and support frames.
Assess roof structures for additional solar PV loading and provide technical recommendations.
Prepare and review structural calculations, design reports, drawings, and technical documentation.
Review wind load, dead load, live load, uplift, anchoring, foundation, and structural stability requirements.
Support the design and review of foundations for ground-mounted solar PV systems, including pile, concrete, and ballast solutions.
Coordinate with electrical engineers, civil engineers, project managers, contractors, and suppliers.
Review supplier mounting-system designs and confirm suitability for South African project conditions.
Conduct site inspections and provide structural engineering input during construction and installation.
Identify structural risks and provide practical engineering solutions.
Support tender submissions, BOQs, technical proposals, method statements, and project handover documentation.
Ensure that all structural works comply with applicable South African standards, project specifications, and safety requirements.

Minimum Requirements

South African citizen or permanent resident with a valid South African ID.
Must be legally entitled to work in South Africa.
Degree, BTech, or National Diploma in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related field.
Minimum 3–5 years’ structural engineering experience.
Minimum 2 years’ proven solar PV project experience is required.
Experience with rooftop solar PV, ground-mounted PV, carport structures, or tracker support structures.
Strong understanding of steel structures, foundations, anchoring systems, roof structures, and load assessments.
Knowledge of South African structural design requirements, including SANS 10400-B for structural design and SANS 10160 for structural actions and loading.
Ability to read and review structural drawings, shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and construction drawings.
Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar drafting/review software.
Experience using structural design software such as Prokon, Tekla, Revit, Robot Structural Analysis, SAP2000, STAAD Pro, or similar will be advantageous.
Valid South African driver’s licence.
Willingness to travel to project sites when required.

Preferred Requirements

ECSA registration as Candidate Engineer, Professional Engineer, Candidate Engineering Technologist, or Professional Engineering Technologist will be advantageous. ECSA states that professional registration generally requires an accredited engineering qualification, structured practical training, experience reports, engineering reports, and a professional review process.
Pr Eng / Pr Tech Eng registration will be highly advantageous, especially for structural sign-off work.
Experience with solar PV mounting structures, trackers, roof assessments, steel fabrication, and foundation design.
Experience preparing structural reports for PV installation approval.
Experience with Eskom, municipal, commercial, industrial, or utility-scale renewable-energy projects.
Experience reviewing geotechnical reports and translating soil conditions into practical foundation recommendations.
Experience with construction supervision, quality inspections, and contractor management.

Skills & Competencies

Strong structural engineering and problem-solving ability.
Good understanding of solar PV construction and mounting systems.
Strong attention to detail and technical accuracy.
Ability to identify structural risks before construction.
Practical site experience and ability to work with contractors.
Good communication skills in English.
Ability to work under pressure and meet project deadlines.
Strong safety awareness and professional responsibility.
Ability to prepare clear technical reports and recommendations.
