Duties

The Baby Class Teacher will be responsible for creating a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment that supports the holistic development of infants. The successful candidate will provide high-quality care and educational experiences that promote each child's social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and language development while ensuring the highest standards of health, safety, and wellbeing.

The Baby Class Teacher (3 months to 18 months) will be expected to:

Deliver age-appropriate learning experiences that stimulate curiosity, exploration, and developmental growth.
Create a warm, responsive, and secure environment where babies feel valued, supported, and safe.
Lead and manage the daily operations of the baby class, ensuring routines are implemented consistently and effectively.
Supervise, mentor, and support assistant teachers and support staff within the classroom.
Monitor and support each child's developmental milestones and individual learning journey.
Build and maintain positive, professional relationships with parents and guardians through regular communication and feedback.
Demonstrate strength of character, integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to the school's values at all times.
Collaborate effectively with colleagues and school leadership to ensure the successful implementation of the school's educational philosophy and standards.
Ensure compliance with all health, safety, hygiene, and safeguarding policies and procedures.
Promote positive relationships and interactions among children, staff, and families.

The Baby Class Teacher will be accountable for the following specific areas of performance:

Academic Delivery

Plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities and experiences that support learning through play, sensory exploration, and responsive caregiving.
Create engaging learning environments that promote early developmental skills and school readiness foundations.

Child Assessment & Reporting

Observe, assess, and document children's developmental progress.
Maintain accurate developmental records and provide regular feedback to parents and school management.
Identify developmental concerns and work collaboratively with families and specialists where necessary.

Child Behaviour & Wellbeing Management

Foster secure attachments and positive social-emotional development.
Support children in developing self-regulation and age-appropriate social skills.
Ensure children's emotional and physical needs are consistently met.

School Brand Ambassadorship

Represent the school professionally and positively at all times.
Build constructive and ongoing partnerships with families and the wider school community.
Uphold and promote the values and reputation of the school.

Administration

Maintain accurate classroom records, attendance registers, developmental observations, and communication logs.
Ensure classroom resources are well-maintained and appropriately utilised.
Complete required reports and documentation within specified timelines.

Health & Safety

Ensure strict adherence to all health, safety, hygiene, and safeguarding requirements.
Monitor feeding, sleeping, toileting, and care routines in accordance with school policies and best practices.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organised classroom environment.
Respond appropriately to emergencies and administer first aid when required.

Qualifications & Experience

A Post-Matric Certificate (NQF Level 5) in Early Childhood Development as a minimum requirement, or
An Undergraduate Degree (NQF Level 6) in Early Childhood Development or B.Ed. (Foundation Phase).
A PGCE may be required if the degree is deemed suitable (e.g., Psychology).
SACE certification and a valid police clearance are mandatory.
Infant and toddler care experience preferred.
Minimum of 3–5 years' teaching experience in an ECD environment, with leadership experience advantageous.
Computer and digital literacy.
Valid First Aid certification.
Sound knowledge of infant development, attachment theory, and early childhood best practices.
