We are looking for an experienced Conventional Turner Machinist and Fitter to join our busy engineering workshop.
This position is not a general production machining environment. We are looking for a practical, experienced tradesman who is comfortable working on a wide variety of hydraulic, agricultural and heavy-equipment components.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
The successful candidate must have proven hands-on experience in conventional lathe machining and Milling including:
- Manufacturing and repairing hydraulic cylinder components.
- Machining hydraulic pistons, glands, bushes, pins, shafts, sleeves and similar components.
- Cutting internal and external threads.
- Working accurately to fine tolerances, including ±0.02 mm where required.
- Using micrometers, verniers, bore gauges, thread gauges and other precision measuring equipment.
- Working from engineering drawings and/or accurately reproducing components from samples.
- Producing quality work while maintaining a fast, steady and productive work pace.
Hydraulic & Mechanical Experience
Candidates must also have strong practical experience with the stripping, assessment and assembly of mechanical components.
May include:
- Hydraulic cylinders
- Hydraulic pumps
- Winch boxes / winch assemblies
- Agricultural machinery components
- Axles and axle assemblies
- Gearboxes and mechanical assemblies
- Housings, shafts, bearings and bushes
- Other agricultural, earthmoving or heavy-equipment components
The candidate must be able to strip a component methodically, identify wear or damage, determine what requires repair or replacement, and correctly reassemble the component.
Thread Repair
Candidates must have practical knowledge and experience with:
- Helicoil installation
- Thread inserts
- Identifying damaged threads
- Selecting the correct repair method
- Drilling and tapping for inserts
- Correctly installing inserts without damaging the component
THE PERSON WE ARE LOOKING FOR
This is a fast-paced and diverse engineering workshop. We therefore need someone who:
- Can move confidently between different types of jobs.
- Is comfortable with repair work where every job may be different.
- Can problem-solve rather than relying solely on drawings.
- Understands the importance of measuring before machining.
- Can work accurately without being unnecessarily slow.
- Takes responsibility for the quality of their own work.
- Can work independently when required.
- Is mechanically minded and understands how components work together.
- Keeps their machine, tooling and work area clean and organised.
- Is reliable, honest and takes pride in their workmanship.
This position is not suitable for a candidate whose experience is limited to CNC or repetitive production machining. Strong conventional machining and practical mechanical repair experience are essential.
