Overview
We are seeking a skilled and self motivated Mining Engineer with open pit experience to join our growing Mine Engineering team. Based in Johannesburg, the successful candidate will play a key technical role in the design, planning, and scheduling process of open-pit mining projects, from conceptual studies through to Feasibility Studies (FS).
This position offers the opportunity to work on global mining studies, contribute to business development initiatives, and lead multi-disciplinary project teams.
Key Responsibilities
Mining Studies & Technical Leadership
- Open pit planning and scheduling at all stages of the project lifecycle, from concept to FS.
- Provide advice on mining fleet, development strategies, life-of-mine planning, and optimisation options.
- Develop mine plans, schedules, budgets, and cost models for open-pit operations.
- Conduct feasibility studies, technical assessments, and economic analyses for new projects and expansions.
- Support due diligence reviews.
Operational & Team Management
- Mentor and supervise junior engineers.
- Foster a strong culture of safety, continuous improvement, and professional growth.
- Monitor mining performance, analyse operational data, and identify areas for optimisation.
Technical Integration & Collaboration
- Interface with geologists, geotechnical, hydrogeology, tailings, closure, processing, environmental, and asset management disciplines.
- Utilise advanced mining software (Datamine, Deswik, etc.) for planning, modelling, and simulation.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and recommendations for senior management and clients.
Business Development & Stakeholder Engagement
- Contribute to strategic business development.
- Support proposal development, client interactions, and market growth initiatives.
- Represent the organisation at meetings, presentations, and industry events.
Travel
- Undertake domestic and international travel as required to support project work.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering (required).
- Master’s degree, professional certifications, or Chartership (advantageous).
Experience
- 5–10+ years of progressive experience in mining engineering.
- Proven track record in open-pit project design and feasibility studies.
- Previous consulting experience is highly regarded.
- Experience supervising teams and leading complex mining projects.
- History of Project Management will be favourable
- While not mandatory, actual on-mine, hands-on experience will be an advantage, helping candidates excel in both study and operational support work.
Technical Skills
- Strong proficiency in mine design and planning software (e.g., Datamine, Deswik).
- Excellent understanding of mining design principles, safety standards, and regulatory compliance.
- Experience in multi-disciplinary collaboration.
- Understanding of reporting according to various international codes (SAMREC Code, SAMVAL Code, NI43-101, S-K 1300, JORC Code, and any other relevant codes).
