Duties & Responsibilities
Depot Operations
YARD
- Ensure containers are dispatched on a First-In, First-Out (FIFO) basis to minimize long-stay units within the depot.
- Maintain orderly and efficient stacking practices, ensuring neat and uniform container placement.
- Promote efficient yard operations by minimizing loading delays and optimizing equipment utilization.
- Plan and coordinate the placement of containers in the workshop, wash bay, and upgrade areas to ensure all units meet the required standard for dispatch.
- Assist in operational continuity by performing the duties of yard clerks or drivers when required.
- Manage and monitor yard shift rotations to ensure optimal manpower coverage.
- Plan and control container movements within the yard to support smooth workflow and operational efficiency.
- Reduce non-billable movements by optimizing yard planning and maximizing billable activity.
TRACKING
- Plan and maintain depot tracking rosters to ensure adequate staffing and operational coverage.
- Attend to and resolve gate reconciliation queries timeously.
- Monitor and update all tracking amendments to maintain accurate system records.
- Compile and distribute daily stock reports for management review.
Reports
- Develop and maintain an up-to-date yard layout plan reflecting all current stack movements.
- Monitor container stock levels continuously to ensure accurate inventory control and efficient yard utilization.
Customer Service
- Proactively communicate any delays to customers
Adhock
- Follow any reasonable instructions given
Desired Experience & Qualification
Minimum Academic and Professional Qualifications and Experience Required for this position
- Grade 12 / Matric qualification (a relevant logistics or supply chain certificate or diploma will be advantageous).
- Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in container depot or yard operations, with at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity.
- Strong understanding of container handling equipment, stacking principles, and FIFO operational practices.
- Proficient in yard planning systems and basic computer literacy (MS Excel, Outlook, depot management systems such as OVD or similar).
- Sound knowledge of health, safety, and environmental standards applicable to depot operations.
- Excellent communication, coordination, and leadership skills.
- Ability to work under pressure, on weekends, and after hours when required.
- Valid Code 8 driver’s license (Code 10 advantageous).
