A Cleaner at a University Residence (student accommodation or residence hall) is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, healthy, and welcoming living environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Key Roles and Responsibilities1. Cleaning Common Areas
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and polish floors.
- Clean corridors, stairways, elevators, lounges, study rooms, and reception areas.
- Dust furniture, windowsills, and other surfaces.
- Ensure common rooms are neat and presentable.
2. Cleaning Bathrooms and Washrooms
- Clean and sanitize toilets, sinks, showers, and bathtubs.
- Replenish soap, toilet paper, paper towels, and other supplies.
- Report plumbing issues such as leaks or blocked drains.
3. Cleaning Student Accommodation Areas
- Clean designated student rooms during scheduled periods, where required.
- Prepare rooms for new residents at the beginning of each semester.
- Deep-clean rooms after students move out.
4. Waste Management
- Empty bins and dispose of waste appropriately.
- Separate and handle recyclable materials according to university policies.
- Ensure refuse collection areas remain clean and hygienic.
5. Health and Safety Compliance
- Use cleaning chemicals and equipment safely.
- Follow health, safety, and infection-control procedures.
- Identify and report hazards such as spills, broken furniture, or damaged flooring.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
6. Equipment Maintenance
- Operate cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, and mops.
- Store cleaning materials safely.
- Report faulty equipment for repair or replacement.
7. Reporting and Communication
- Report maintenance problems, security concerns, or damages to supervisors.
- Communicate professionally with students, residence staff, and contractors.
- Keep records of completed cleaning tasks where required.
8. Supporting Residence Operations
- Assist with cleaning during student check-ins and check-outs.
- Help prepare facilities for university events or inspections.
- Respond to emergency cleaning situations, such as spills or floods.
