Job Purpose
We are looking for a DevOps Engineer to own how our software is built, shipped, run, and monitored - working shoulder-to-shoulder with our development team to build and maintain the environments they depend on. You will own our CI/CD pipelines, containerised services, observability, and our PostgreSQL high-availability stack.
You carry strong Linux fundamentals on purpose: you and our Systems Operations Engineer share an operational core so that either of you can keep the lights on when the other is unavailable. You'll work very closely with the developers - building, shipping, and maintaining development environments and delivery pipelines that move features safely from a developer's machine through to production - and continuously improving how all of that runs.
Key Responsibility Areas
● Build, maintain, and improve the development, staging, and production environments the development team relies on - keeping parity between them and making promotion between environments smooth and predictable.
● Build and maintain continuous integration and delivery pipelines (Bitbucket Pipelines) to support development and production deployment.
● Own containerised services - Docker / Docker Compose, image strategy, and reverse-proxy/routing (nginx).
● Operate the PostgreSQL high-availability cluster - Patroni-managed failover, etcd consensus/quorum, and HAProxy routing.
● Own observability as a shared platform - centralised logging (Graylog), service/application monitoring (Zabbix), and alerting (PagerDuty) - ensuring critical services are continuously monitored.
● Find and remove repetitive or error-prone tasks through automation.
● Collaborate with developers on infrastructure requirements for new features - planning, design, documentation, and implementation.
● Manage code flow from local devices through multiple environments to production (the DevOps lifecycle).
● Maintain redundancy and documented, tested backups for the services you own.
● Produce and maintain design, systems, and runbook documentation.
● Continuously optimise existing processes, systems, and infrastructure.
● Participate in an after-hours and weekend support rotation shared across the infrastructure team.
Required Skills
● Strong Linux system administration (Ubuntu, CentOS/RHEL) - this is core, not incidental.
● Strong Linux command-line proficiency.
● Working knowledge of network services (NFS, SMB, LDAP, DNS) and the OSI model.
● Version control proficiency (Git) and package management familiarity (rpm, deb).
Required Experience
● Production Docker / Docker Compose and reverse-proxy configuration (nginx) with TLS.
● CI/CD pipeline design and operation (Bitbucket Pipelines, or transferable: GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Jenkins).
● High-availability PostgreSQL operations - Patroni, etcd, HAProxy - including failover and recovery (or strong comparable HA-database experience).
● Web server technologies (NGINX, Apache HTTPD, HAProxy).
● Centralised logging and monitoring (Graylog/ELK, Zabbix, Prometheus/Grafana).
● Scripting (Bash, Python) and an automation-first mindset.
● One or more programming languages (Node.js, JavaScript, Java, or PHP) - enough to work fluently with developers.
● Agile delivery (Jira, Bitbucket) and a change-control discipline.
Advantageous Experience
● Container orchestration (Kubernetes, OpenShift).
● Infrastructure as code and configuration management (Terraform, Ansible).
● Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) - relevant to our international expansion.
● In-memory data stores (Redis, Memcached).
● Virtualisation exposure (Proxmox, VMware) - deepens cover with the Systems Operations Engineer.
● Security audits and standards (PCI-DSS, ISMS, ISO 27000), server hardening, and defensive tooling - important in our regulated industry.
● PKI and certificate lifecycle management (Let's Encrypt, commercial CAs).
Attributes
● Self-motivated, proactive, and comfortable taking initiative.
● Strong team spirit; collaborates naturally with developers and operations alike.
● Logical and objective, with the creativity to find better ways of working.
● Comfortable under pressure and across multiple concurrent initiatives.
● Clear written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical staff.
● Flexible and adaptable in day-to-day work.
Qualifications
● Degree/Diploma in Information Systems or related field.
● At least 4 years in DevOps and/or Linux operations roles.
● Demonstrated ownership of CI/CD and production runtime systems.
