Job Title: Senior Structural Engineer

Job Purpose
The Senior Structural Engineer is responsible for leading the planning, design, analysis, and delivery of structural engineering projects across the built environment sector. The incumbent provides technical leadership, ensures compliance with statutory and professional standards, manages project teams, mentors junior engineers, and contributes to business development while delivering projects within budget, scope, and agreed timeframes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Structural Design and Technical Leadership
· Lead the structural design of buildings, industrial, commercial, institutional, residential, and civil infrastructure projects.
· Perform structural analysis and design using relevant engineering software.
· Prepare detailed engineering calculations, reports, drawings, and technical specifications.
· Ensure designs comply with:
o South African National Standards (SANS)
o National Building Regulations
o Applicable Eurocodes and international standards where required
o Client specifications
· Review and approve engineering designs prepared by junior engineers.
· Conduct design verification and quality assurance reviews.
· Resolve complex structural engineering challenges.
2. Project Management
· Manage multiple engineering projects simultaneously.
· Prepare project execution plans.
· Develop project budgets and monitor expenditure.
· Monitor project schedules and deliverables.
· Coordinate multidisciplinary project teams.
· Manage project risks and mitigation strategies.
· Attend project progress meetings.
· Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to required quality standards.
3. Client Relationship Management
· Serve as the primary technical contact for clients.
· Attend client meetings and presentations.
· Provide engineering advice throughout the project lifecycle.
· Build long-term client relationships.
· Respond to technical queries.
· Prepare technical proposals and fee estimates.
· Support business development initiatives.
4. Construction Support
· Review contractor shop drawings.
· Conduct site inspections.
· Monitor construction quality.
· Issue site instructions where required.
· Resolve construction-related technical issues.
· Certify completed structural works.
· Prepare site inspection reports.
5. Quality Management
· Ensure compliance with the company's Quality Management System (QMS).
· Review engineering documentation.
· Implement quality assurance procedures.
· Ensure project documentation is properly controlled.
· Participate in internal technical audits.
· Promote continuous improvement initiatives.
6. Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance
· Ensure engineering designs comply with applicable health and safety legislation.
· Identify structural risks during design.
· Participate in design risk assessments.
· Support Construction Regulations compliance.
· Promote sustainable engineering practices.
7. Team Leadership
· Supervise Structural Engineers.
· Mentor Graduate Engineers.
· Mentor Candidate Engineers.
· Review staff performance.
· Identify training and development needs.
· Support professional registration of junior staff.
· Promote collaboration across engineering disciplines.
8. Financial Management
· Monitor project profitability.
· Review project costs.
· Approve timesheets where delegated.
· Monitor resource utilisation.
· Assist with annual budgeting.
· Contribute to revenue generation through successful project delivery.
9. Business Development
· Identify new business opportunities.
· Prepare technical proposals.
· Prepare tender submissions.
· Participate in client presentations.
· Develop strategic relationships with clients.
· Support marketing initiatives.
· Represent the company at industry events.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) or Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSc Eng) in Civil Engineering (Structural)
- Master's degree in Structural Engineering (advantageous)
Professional Registration
- Registered Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) (essential)
Experience
· Minimum 10 years' post-qualification structural engineering experience.
· Minimum 5 years in a senior engineering role.
· Experience in consulting engineering.
· Experience managing multidisciplinary projects.
· Experience in structural design for commercial, residential, industrial, healthcare, educational, and public infrastructure projects.
· Experience administering engineering contracts.
Working Conditions
· Office-based with regular travel to project sites.
· Occasional work outside normal business hours to meet project deadlines.
· Frequent interaction with clients, contractors, architects, quantity surveyors, project managers, and other engineering professionals.
