About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Actuary or Senior Actuarial Analyst to join our growing South African team. This is a technically demanding, high-impact role responsible for delivering best-practice actuarial analysis, technical pricing, and portfolio monitoring across Pacific's insurance portfolios. You will work closely with the Lead Underwriter, Chief Underwriting Officer, and Product Specialists to translate complex actuarial insights into clear, actionable recommendations that drive profitability, growth, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Actuarial Analysis & Pricing
- Develop and maintain technical pricing models for direct and binder portfolios, recommending pricing and product changes to improve profitability and competitiveness.
- Conduct and document technical pricing reviews, relativity reviews, and pricing implementation testing across all product lines.
- Monitor and adjust rates to maintain profitability and market competitiveness, providing clear recommendations to the CUO and Lead Underwriter.
- Troubleshoot increases in claims costs and identify root causes driving deterioration, recommending corrective actions.
- Conduct competitor monitoring and benchmarking across key product lines to inform pricing strategy.
- Maintain thorough documentation of all actuarial analyses, assumptions, and model changes.
Portfolio Monitoring & Reporting
- Design, build, and maintain standardised portfolio monitoring and reporting packs providing comprehensive insights into portfolio performance across all product lines.
- Develop and maintain TMD monitoring metrics and analytical reporting to support the Senior Product Specialist in conducting TMD reviews and managing distribution compliance obligations.
- Build and maintain detailed portfolio monitoring frameworks at rating factor level, enabling early identification of adverse mix changes or emerging risks.
- Implement mix change detection methodologies (e.g. CART) to support proactive portfolio management.
- Develop and maintain budgeting and forecasting models for portfolio performance in collaboration with the CUO and finance team.
- Ensure analytical datasets are automated, reconciled, and available to meet the needs of the Appointed Actuary.
- Build and maintain valuation models that can support financial reporting
Data & Analytics Infrastructure
- Collaborate with data teams to establish and maintain actuarial datasets for modelling and monitoring purposes.
- Scale best-practice actuarial and analytics methodologies across the business to enhance reporting and meet the needs of various business functions.
- Support the development and upskilling of Actuarial Analysts by sharing methodologies, tools, and technical standards.
Relationship & Communication
- Present actuarial findings, portfolio insights, and pricing recommendations to senior management and stakeholders in a clear and actionable manner.
- Liaise with the finance team to support financial reporting and reserving processes.
- Collaborate with the Lead Underwriter on integrated underwriting and actuarial reviews.
- Work with cross-functional teams — including claims, distribution, product, reinsurance, finance, and the Badger Group actuaries — to support data-driven decision-making.
- Mentor and support the development of junior Actuarial Analysts, providing technical guidance and fostering a culture of continuous learning and analytical rigour.
Bonus Skills
- Experience with reserving, budgeting, and forecasting in a general insurance context.
- Familiarity with APRA FAR obligations and their application to pricing and product functions.
- Familiarity with IFRS17.
- Experience building automated reporting pipelines or working with BI tools.
- Familiarity with general insurance products such as Pet, Travel, Motor, Home, Property, Liability and Commercial packages.
