The incumbent will be responsible for interpreting the daily loading plans of rail commodities and plan train movements for the shift safely.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Applying Rail Knowledge principles for performing actual shunter duties in the operational environment.

Performing the shunting process, which represents, organized movement of rolling stock following relevant shunting signals and shunting terminology for safe conveyance of rolling stock.

Assisting Train Driver with the correct utilizing of different train control systems and ensuring correct application of safe train movement principles in accordance with company procedures, RSR and equipment manufacture.

Directing train drivers when coupling or uncoupling of rolling stock from a train composition.

Transferring of wagons from one track to another.

Delivering or removing wagons from freight yards, maintenance, workshops, or rail wagons onto loading bays.

Deploying of shunting rolling stock within the useful length of the tracks and securing the wagons from self-movement (uncontrolled movement).

Safely parking of rail wagons, conducting safety checks on trains, interpretating of signalling, wagon types, and classes.

Utilizing the various semaphore signals, colour-light signals, track side indicators, and train control methods for shunting purposes in a specific environment.

Operating and performing applicable train brake system (Airbrake & Vacuum) within company specific instructions and manufacturer specifications.

Maintaining safe working conditions and promoting good housekeeping.

Qualifications & Experience:

Grade 12.
-
Shunting Certificate (MQA standard).

A minimum of 2 years uninterrupted shunting experience.

Valid Shunting license.
