The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and optimizing SQL databases, as well as translating business requirements into technical solutions. Take full responsibility for the SQL database environment from a design, clustering, maintenance and upgrade perspective and work with other technical teams and developers to ensure AVBOB systems functions optimally.
- Daily SQL maintenance tasks to ensure high availability, capacity and performance
- Controlling access permissions and privileges
- Developing, managing and testing back-up and recovery plans with backup team
- Ensuring that storage and archiving procedures are functioning correctly
- Working closely with IT project managers, database developers and software developer
- Communicating regularly with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security
- Commissioning and installing new applications and customizing existing applications in order to make them fit for purpose
Ensure AVBOB system availability by attending to maintenance and support for your area of responsibility
- Ensure SQL environment is up to date with AVBOB version standard (N – 1) for all software modules, infrastructure firmware and application versions and or show evidence of compliance or approved reason for not compliance
- Timeously deliver on SQL related project requirements without supervision, within agreed timelines, working with other teams, end to end to ensure the most efficient task delivery
- Effectively running daily ops attending to calls logged and incident raise against area of responsibility
- Implement new databases in line with design specifications, including the installation of DBMS.
- Design supporting processes to ensure a functioning database (e.g., user access, performance monitoring, backup, replication, patching).
- Troubleshoot incidents and events up to the second level.
- Escalate performance, security, or availability issues as necessary.
- Engage with database vendors to troubleshoot urgent or complex incidents.
- Define, create, and maintain client application database structures.
- Ensure data recoverability, database availability, data integrity, agreed levels of performance, and capacity planning for physical databases
Document AVBOB systems, infrastructure and configuration for area of responsibility, both Production and DR.
- Ensure up-to-date architecture drawings / documentation, configuration, setup signed off by Infrastructure manager is available in agreed shared folders for your area of responsibility
- Ensure roadmap documentation for your area are up to date showing all infrastructure in your area, firmware versions, end of life dates, end of support dates, future recommendations and any other prudent information needed to make strategic decisions around technology changes
- Deliver detailed reporting on daily, weekly, monthly basis as required by business. Ensure reporting is of a high standard and professionally prepared.
- Research emerging trends, functionality, and architecture related to the DBMS.
- Maintain and update maintenance plans and documentation at least quarterly or after significant changes.
- Enhance and improve database support processes.
- Plan and implement DBMS upgrades.
- Assist in developing the roadmap for future DBMS enhancement
Governance - Documenting, implementing and ensuring policies and relevant procedure are in place to ensure compliance
- Ensure governance policies exist and is up to date, signed off by ICT management and presented to IT Services Lead as part of governance deliverables. Adoption of the team agreed framework is important and needs to be aligned.
- Ensure all basic SOP for your area of responsibilities are in place (and talks to areas covered by policies)
- Maintenance renewal of products under portfolio, planned and renewed on time, before the maintenance expires
- Writing database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata)
Establish and maintain high level and effective relationships with internal, external client and member of other streams in ICT.

- Work with internal ICT teams and ensure effective communication in order for issues / project to be attended to and completed efficiently

Ensure budgetary requirement are up to date and planned for timeously for area of responsibility infrastructure.
- Ensure budgetary information for your area is available timeously and that documentation around roadmaps area up to date for management to clearly understand the requirement
- Ensure operational expenses around health checks, licensing, maintenance renewals are accounted for and in OPEX budgets
- Ensure effective license management is in place and optimize with timeous input into budgeting to ensure AVBOB is compliant. Work on optimizing SQL environment to make optimal use of licenses
