Role summary
The Enrolled Nurse is to ensure that the patient receives the desired standard of nursing care, there must be active involvement in all aspects of clinical nursing which will fulfil the needs of each patient. In order to do this the Enrolled Nurse must develop the knowledge and skills required to successfully carry out all the aspects of clinical work delegated to him/her. She will be working under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
This includes:
1.Doing the psychiatric nursing evaluation and comprehensively completing the documentation
2. Provision of a therapeutic environment.
3.The therapeutic use of self: a)Forming therapeutic nurse/patient relationships b) Doing crisis intervention.
4.Providing psychiatric nursing care
5.Administering and evaluating the effects of medication:
A) Giving health education to patient, families and the public when appropriate.
B) Doing discharge education.
C)Ensuring that all information pertaining to the patient is recorded accurately and legibly signed
D) Ensuring that confidentiality is maintained at all times.
6.Carrying out patient care and specific duties as delegated by the unit manager: a) Ensuring that safe patient care is practised at all times, especially with regard to patients on Special
Observation.
7.Maintaining open communication with family members and significant others at all times
Key work output and accountabilities
- As an integral member of the nursing team he/she is expected to work in co-operation with all his/her nursing colleagues.
- The EN shall work in co-operation with all members of the Multi-Disciplinary team, Administrative team and the Clinic management.
- The EN is expected to be familiar with the content of the policy and procedure file and to ensure that implementation of said Policies and procedures are adhered to by themselves and their subordinates.
- He/she is responsible for giving feedback to other members of the nursing team in regard to changes in a patient’s treatment, any new decisions that have been taken, or any management changes.
- The EN is encouraged to make suggestions and offer contributions in regard to improving nursing care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse
- He/she is also encouraged to become involved in problem solving.
- In the absence of the unit manager or as a delegated duty the EN will be able to plan systematically, He/she will be able to adapt as circumstances change and will be able to successfully carry a greater work load.
- The EN shall delegate duties in accordance to the knowledge, skills and attitudes of colleagues and subordinates, thus maximizing the utilisation of manpower and improving productivity.
Skills profile
Education
- Must be registered with SANC as an Enrolled Nurse
Work experience
- Minimum 2 year experience as an Enrolled Nurse.
- Experience in a Psychiatric facility.
Knowledge
- Good general knowledge and understanding of legislation pertaining to the specific business environment
