SENIOR ACCOUNTANT
Role Overview
The successful candidate will take ownership of a portfolio of clients and be responsible for the full accounting function, tax compliance, and independent review engagements. This role requires a high level of technical competence, professionalism, and the ability to work independently while maintaining strong client relationships.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Maintain full accounting records for multiple clients across various industries
- Prepare monthly, management, and annual financial statements
- Process and review bookkeeping, including cashbooks, journals, and general ledger maintenance
- Perform and review bank, creditor, debtor, and balance sheet reconciliations
- Manage year-end processes and audit file preparation
Independent Reviews
- Perform independent review engagements in accordance with applicable standards
- Compile and review annual financial statements for sign-off
- Ensure compliance with Companies Act and applicable reporting frameworks
Taxation
- Prepare and submit tax returns for individuals, companies, and trusts
- Handle provisional tax calculations and submissions
- Manage SARS queries, verifications, and audits
- Stay up to date with changes in tax legislation and ensure compliance
VAT & Payroll
- Prepare and submit VAT returns and perform VAT reconciliations
- Ensure compliance with SARS VAT regulations
- Oversee payroll processing (where applicable), including PAYE, UIF, SDL submissions
Client & Practice Management
- Liaise directly with clients and provide advisory support
- Manage deadlines and ensure timely submission of all statutory returns
- Mentor and assist junior staff where required Identify process improvements and efficiencies within the firm
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent
- Completed articles (SAIPA, SAICA, or similar)
- Registered with a recognised professional body (SAIPA / SAICA / AGA(SA) / CA(SA))
- Minimum 1 – 2 years post-article experience in a similar role
- Strong working knowledge of: IFRS / IFRS for SMEs South African tax legislation (Income Tax, VAT, Companies Act)
- Proven experience performing independent reviews
- Proficiency in accounting software (Sage/Pastel, Xero, or similar)
- Advanced Excel skills
Advantageous Skills & Experience
- Experience with multiple client portfolios in an accounting practice
- Knowledge of payroll systems (SimplePay, Sage Payroll, PaySpace)
- Draftworx/CaseWare experience (or similar financial statement software)
- Experience dealing directly with SARS audits and disputes
