As a Proficiency Specialist, you will play an integral role in strengthening and maintaining quality standards across our laboratory and support service environments. This role is centred on ensuring compliance with recognised quality and accreditation standards, while supporting the consistency, accuracy, and reliability of laboratory quality control programmes and proficiency testing activities.
Working collaboratively with laboratory teams and key stakeholders, you will help create a culture where quality is embedded in everyday practice and where continuous improvement is encouraged. Through your expertise, guidance, and support, you will contribute to an environment that enables high-quality outcomes, empowers leaders and teams to uphold best practice, and supports the ongoing development of capabilities required for future success.

Qualification Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will hold a relevant Medical Technologist qualification and be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Clinpath Technologist. You will have completed training in ISO 15189 Medical Laboratories as well as Requirements for Quality and Competence, as well as formal Quality Control training.
These qualifications will provide the strong technical and professional foundation needed to support quality assurance initiatives, contribute to accreditation requirements, and guide best practice across the laboratory environment.
You will bring solid experience gained within a laboratory environment, including at least 3 years working as a Medical Technologist and 2 years exposure to quality control, accreditation requirements, safety practices, and audit processes. Your background will have provided you with a strong understanding of laboratory operations and the importance of maintaining uniform quality standards.
Experience working with quality control systems and proficiency testing programmes will enable you to confidently coordinate external quality assessment activities, support interlaboratory initiatives, and assist with audit and accreditation requirements. In addition, your extensive experience in quality control calculations will allow you to provide valuable technical insight and support to laboratory teams.
Your ability to work across multiple stakeholders, guide corrective actions, facilitate quality-related training, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives will be essential in ensuring that quality remains a shared responsibility throughout the organisation.
You must also be willing to travel as required.

You possess a strong understanding of Quality Management System principles, practices, and standards, including ISO 9001, ISO 15189, ISO 17025, and ISO 17043. Your knowledge of healthcare regulations, laboratory accreditation requirements, and health and safety standards enables you to provide informed guidance and maintain compliance within a highly regulated environment.
You are highly proficient in quality control calculations and comfortable using quality management software, laboratory information management systems, and a variety of digital platforms and applications. Your technical expertise is balanced by a passion for knowledge sharing, allowing you to confidently facilitate training and support the ongoing development of colleagues and experiential learners.
You approach challenges with curiosity, professionalism, and a solutions-focused mindset, ensuring that quality practices continue to evolve in line with industry developments and organisational needs.
Role Impact
In this role, you will make a meaningful contribution to the quality, integrity, and continuous improvement of laboratory services. By coordinating external quality assessment programmes, maintaining interlaboratory processes, and supporting accreditation requirements, you will help ensure the ongoing reliability and consistency of laboratory results.
Your guidance during audits, assessments, and clinical trial reviews will support laboratories in identifying opportunities for improvement and implementing sustainable solutions. Through training, coaching, and knowledge sharing, you will help build confidence and capability within teams, creating an environment where learning, accountability, and excellence are encouraged.
