Purpose Of Role
Furnace Operator is accountable and responsible for the safe achievement of metallurgical targets in the section. The incumbent will execute and control the physical operational work in the section. The position often takes on manual labour duties in order to operate the section and maintain a clean and safe working environment. Efficient operation of the various sections and equipment in the Plant.
Role Context
- Optimise efficiency and recoveries to produce quality products that meet the required specifications.
- Liaise with Smelter Production Coordinator with regard to process variables changes in the section.
- Process control within defined recipe.
- Problem solving skills.
- Record and analyse production stoppages and equipment.
- Participate on root cause analysis process.
- Ensure adherence to all safety (i.e., create awareness of hazards and behaviour)
- Correct non-compliance to objectives and safety standards.
- Comply to safety rules, policies and procedures.
- Contribute in pre-shift safety and work discussions.
- Completion of necessary documents (i.e. Risk assessments, inspection sheets, job cards, etc.)
- Ensure that team members execute all tasks safely.
- Assist colleagues on process adjustments to maintain high recoveries and quality of products.
- Adherence to the shift production plan.
- Operate the equipment in the section.
- Execution of process maintenance.
- Adherence to agreed process parameters for the efficient operation of the process section to achieve hourly and shifty targets.
- Assist with conducting of planned task observations on process attendants;
- Adhere to the planned inspection schedule for critical equipment in the section in order to ensure preventative action is taken before equipment failure occurs by reporting deviations/defects timeously.
- Work closely with the maintenance department in order to ensure a world class maintenance culture is established and maintained on the plant.
- Communicate failures/breakdowns and deviations in process or equipment to the Smelter Production Coordinator.
- Assist support services during breakdowns in order to limit downtime while ensuring adherence to safety standards.
- Conduct equipment inspections and section inspections at the start of every shift and correct deficiencies.
- Perform acting duties on behalf of the smelter production coordinator as and when required by the organisation.
- Perform any other additional task reasonably requested by the supervisor and in line with the operational requirement.
- Good housekeeping practices.
Qualifications
- Grade 12/ NQF Level 4
- NQF Level 2 Metal Production Programme Skills advantageous
Job specific experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in Induction/electric arc furnace operation.
- Processing Skills (i.e., Induction/ electric arc furnace operation)
