The Registered Nurse (Maternity) provides compassionate, evidence-based nursing care to mothers and newborns throughout antenatal, labour, delivery, and postnatal care while ensuring a positive patient experience.
1. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY
- The primary responsibility of the Maternity RN is to offer safe and supportive care throughout the antenatal, labour, delivery, and postnatal phases for mothers and their babies. This involves close monitoring during labour, assisting with deliveries, and providing essential newborn care.
- The role emphasises family education, emotional support, and maintaining a caring environment that promotes maternal and child health.
2. KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS (KPA)
- Labour monitoring and delivery support.
- Maternal and neonatal care.
- Health education for families.
- Family-centred environment.
- Compliance with maternity protocol
3. KEY WORK OUTPUT AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Provide maternal and neonatal nursing care.
- Monitor mothers and newborns.
- Assist with labour and delivery.
- Promote breastfeeding and newborn education.
- Administer medication safely.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
4. REQUIREMENTS
- Current SANC registration as a Professional Nurse with valid APC.
- Minimum 1–2 years’ experience in Maternity / Labour Ward.
- Ability to work shifts, including night duty.
- Sound knowledge of foetal monitoring and obstetric emergencies.
5. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION AND PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in General Nursing.
- Advanced Midwifery qualification (highly advantageous).
- Neonatal Resuscitation Programme (NRP) training (advantageous).
- Computer literacy.
