Director / Senior Architect
Job Purpose
To provide architectural design, documentation, project coordination, and contract administration services for a variety of building and infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading projects from concept through to completion, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, client expectations, industry standards, and company quality management systems.
Key Responsibilities
· Design and Project Development
· Prepare concept, schematic, and detailed architectural designs.
· Develop design solutions that meet client requirements, project budgets, and regulatory standards.
· Produce high-quality presentations, reports, drawings, and technical documentation.
· Conduct site analyses and feasibility studies.
· Coordinate design development with multidisciplinary teams.
Technical Documentation
· Prepare and review architectural drawings, specifications, schedules, and contract documentation.
· Ensure compliance with the National Building Regulations, SANS standards, municipal by-laws, and industry best practices.
· Review and approve drawings prepared by junior staff.
· Ensure accuracy and quality of all project documentation.
Project Management and Coordination
· Manage multiple projects simultaneously from inception to completion.
· Coordinate with clients, consultants, contractors, and authorities.
· Attend project meetings and provide technical guidance.
· Monitor project programmes, budgets, and deliverables.
· Identify and mitigate project risks.
Contract Administration
· Conduct site inspections and prepare progress reports.
· Review contractor submissions, shop drawings, and material approvals.
· Assess payment certificates and variation orders.
· Monitor construction quality and compliance with contract requirements.
· Assist in project close-out and handover procedures.
Leadership and Mentorship
· Provide technical guidance to junior architects and technologists.
· Assist in developing departmental standards and procedures.
· Contribute to staff training and professional development.
Minimum Qualifications
Architect
· Bachelor of Architecture, Bachelor of Architectural Studies, B.Arch, M.Arch, or equivalent qualification.
· Registered as a Professional Architect with South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP).
Senior Architectural Technologist
· National Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Architectural Technology or equivalent qualification.
· Registered as a Professional Senior Architectural Technologist with South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP).
Minimum Experience
Architect
· Minimum 5 years' relevant experience.
· Experience in public sector and private sector projects.
· Proven experience in design development, documentation, and contract administration.
Senior Architectural Technologist
· Minimum 8 years' relevant experience.
· Demonstrated experience managing projects from concept to completion.
· Experience in multidisciplinary consulting environments.
Technical Competencies
· Proficiency in AutoCAD.
· Proficiency in Revit and BIM methodologies.
· Working knowledge of SketchUp, Lumion, or similar visualization software.
· Microsoft Office Suite proficiency.
· Sound knowledge of South African building regulations and standards.
· Understanding of JBCC and other construction contracts.
· Knowledge of project management principles.
· Ability to prepare specifications and technical reports.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
· Delivery of projects within agreed timelines and budgets.
· Quality and accuracy of design documentation.
· Client satisfaction and stakeholder engagement.
· Compliance with statutory and contractual requirements.
· Effective management of project risks and resources.
· Successful mentorship and development of junior staff.
