Job Summary
The Mechanical Fitter is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and continuous improvement of converting machinery and associated equipment. The incumbent will ensure that all production equipment operates safely, efficiently, and reliably to minimize downtime and support production targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Preventative Maintenance
- Conduct scheduled preventative maintenance on converting machines and auxiliary equipment.
- Inspect machinery components for wear, damage, and required replacement.
- Lubricate, clean, and adjust machinery according to maintenance schedules.
- Complete maintenance checklists and records accurately.
- Breakdown Maintenance
- Respond promptly to production breakdowns and equipment failures.
- Diagnose mechanical faults and identify root causes.
- Repair or replace faulty components to restore production operations.
- Work closely with production personnel to minimize downtime.
- Equipment Installation & Modification
- Install new machinery, equipment, and production lines.
- Assemble, align, and commission mechanical equipment.
- Assist with machinery upgrades, modifications, and continuous improvement projects.
- Participate in factory expansion and improvement initiatives.
- Mechanical Repairs
- Repair pumps, gearboxes, bearings, shafts, couplings, conveyors, rollers, and pneumatic systems.
- Perform precision fitting, alignment, and balancing of rotating equipment.
- Replace worn mechanical components and ensure proper machine functionality.
Minimum Qualifcations
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- Qualified Mechanical Fitter Trade Test Certificate.
- Valid driver's licence will be advantageous.
- Experience
- Minimum 3-5 years' experience as a Mechanical Fitter in a manufacturing environment.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve machine reliability and performance.
- Support TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) initiatives.
- Recommend cost-effective maintenance solutions.
- Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
Knowledge and Skills
- Technical Skills
- Mechanical fitting and equipment maintenance.
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings.
- Hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Gearboxes, bearings, drives, and conveyor systems.
- Fault finding and root cause analysis.
- Preventative and predictive maintenance practices.
- Computer Skills
- Basic Microsoft Office proficiency.
- Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) will be advantageous
