A Chef Hand assists chefs and kitchen staff with food preparation, cleaning, and general
kitchen duties to ensure smooth daily kitchen operations. The role requires teamwork,
attention to hygiene standards, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Assist chefs with basic food preparation tasks such as washing, peeling, chopping,
and portioning ingredients.
Prepare cooking utensils, equipment, and workstations before service.
Maintain cleanliness of kitchen areas, equipment, and storage spaces.
Wash dishes, pots, pans, and kitchen tools.
Help receive, unpack, and store food deliveries correctly.
Ensure food safety and hygiene standards are always followed.
Dispose of waste and maintain sanitary conditions in the kitchen.
Support chefs during busy service periods.
Refill stock and supplies as needed.
Follow instructions from chefs, supervisors, and kitchen managers.
Requirements and Skills
Basic knowledge of kitchen operations and food hygiene.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Good physical stamina and ability to stand for long periods.
Strong teamwork and communication skills.
Willingness to learn and follow instructions.
Ability to maintain cleanliness and organization.
Previous kitchen or hospitality experience is an advantage but not always required.
Qualifications
Grade 10/Matric certificate preferred.
Food handling or hospitality training is an added advantage.
Previous experience in restaurants, hotels, or catering environments beneficial.
Working Conditions
Shift work, including weekends and holidays.
Hot and busy kitchen environment.
Requires lifting and carrying kitchen supplies and equipment.
