Position Title: Candidate Attorney
Reports To: Admitted Attorney / Principal
Purpose of the Role
To gain practical legal experience and training while assisting attorneys with legal, administrative, and client-related matters in accordance with the requirements of the Legal Practice Council.
Requirements:
- Fluent in English and Afrikaans (essential as most of our clients are Afrikaans-speaking)
- Must have own reliable transport
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Professional appearance and conduct.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct legal research and analyze legislation, case law, and legal opinions.
- Draft legal documents, contracts, pleadings, affidavits, notices, and correspondence.
- Assist attorneys in preparing matters for court, arbitration, mediation, and consultations.
- Attend court proceedings and observe hearings where required.
- Consult with clients and take instructions under supervision.
- Manage case files and maintain accurate records.
- Liaise with clients, advocates, courts, government departments, and other stakeholders.
- Assist with debt collection, conveyancing, commercial transactions, litigation, or other practice-specific work.
- Ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards.
- Perform general administrative and office duties related to legal practice.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) from a recognized university.
- Strong legal research and drafting skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational abilities.
- Computer literacy, including legal research databases and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Professional conduct and confidentiality.
