Main purpose of the job:
- To coordinate and analyse Health Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) data sets and targets working with the field team and research leadership
Location:
- Wits Vaccines & Infectious Diseases Analytics (VIDA) Research Unit, Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Soweto - Johannesburg
Key performance areas:
HDSS data management
- Check, analyse, formulate and clean incoming data in line with project requirements
- Capture cleaned data into the relevant database/s or programme/s and/or implement systems around effective data capture and quality checks
- Generate, review and submit data quality reports and address queries
- Support management with quantitative research-related and HDSS dataset activities required
- Coordinate data analysis processes with data management teams; oversee integrity and quality of data
- Check, analyse, formulate and clean incoming data in line with project requirements when required
- Submit Data Quality report to your line manager when required
- Provide guidance to data collection teams on data quality issues as and when it arises
- Intermediate or advanced use of Stata or R for data analysis
Research and analysis
- Conduct literature reviews
- Prepare data tables and analysis as required
- Prepare and deliver presentations and reports
- Lead and produce own publications where possible with research leadership
- Assist with related research objectives and projects as required
- Assist in writing research protocols
Customer Service & stakeholder relations
- Manage internal and external stakeholder expectations and communicate appropriately with initiative and solutions
- Maintain high standard and successful internal and external stakeholder relations
- Escalate issues appropriately, ensuring adequate discretion, risk management integrated problem-solving
- Communicate with donor representatives as required
- Effectively collaborate through work processes in order to maintain high levels of productivity
Effective self-management and performance ownership
- Actively and consistently maintain high standards of professionalism in all aspects of personal presentation and delivery
- Apply knowledge of the organisational systems, structures, policies and procedures to achieve results

Required minimum education and training:
- Degree in Demography or applicable demographic
Required minimum work experience:
- 2 years of experience working in research environment
- Demographic surveillance experience preferred
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Ability to work under pressure
- Willingness to work extended hours
- Willingness to travel
- Openness to working in rural areas and cultural awareness specifically of Soweto and surrounds
- Deadline driven
- Able to work without supervision
- Willing to contribute to and lead own publications and research questions
- Advanced computer literacy with emphasis on working with SAS, STATA or SPSS
