About the role
Ascent Holdings is a multi-site construction group looking for a hands-on, deadline-driven Financial Accountant to join our Finance Department. This is a supervisory role: you will own the accuracy and integrity of our financial records, act as the first line of review over the Finance Administrator, and bridge daily transactional processing with monthly management reporting. If you take pride in a clean trial balance, spot a reconciling item before it becomes a problem, and enjoy tightening up processes rather than waiting to be told, we want to hear from you.
What you will do
● Supervise, review and mentor the Finance Administrator — allocate tasks, set daily priorities and quality-check their capture.
● Oversee daily capture of revenue, expenditure, AP and AR; process month-end and year-end journals, accruals and provisions; maintain the general ledger.
● Perform and review bank reconciliations and all balance-sheet recons (creditors, debtors, payroll control, VAT, intercompany).
● Ensure source documents are matched, filed and audit-ready across physical and digital systems.
● Prepare and submit statutory returns on time — VAT201, EMP201 (PAYE / UIF / SDL) — and support provisional and annual tax submissions and the external audit.
● Prepare monthly management accounts, variance analysis, departmental cost reports, cash flow and creditor payment runs.
What you need
● BCom Accounting / Financial Management or equivalent NQF Level 7 qualification.
● Minimum 3–5 years in a financial accounting role. Construction / project-based industry experience is highly advantageous.
● Solid, practical working knowledge of VAT, PAYE, UIF, SDL and SARS eFiling — including calculating and submitting VAT201 and EMP201 returns yourself.
● Hands-on experience in accounting software (Xero preferred; Pastel / Sage or similar) and advanced Excel.
● SAIPA / SAICA / CIMA membership or studying towards — advantageous. Valid driver’s licence advantageous.
● High integrity and confidentiality, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure during month-end and statutory deadlines.
