About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Medical Microbiology Pathologist to join our dynamic laboratory team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing specialist diagnostic microbiology services, ensuring the delivery of accurate and timely laboratory results, maintaining the highest quality standards, and collaborating with clinicians and other healthcare professionals to improve patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to:
- Managing the microbiology laboratory and providing professional supervision and guidance to laboratory staff in collaboration with the Laboratory Manager.
- Authorising and taking responsibility for final diagnostic microbiology reports issued to clinicians.
- Consulting and collaborating with clinicians, infection prevention and control practitioners, hospital management, and other stakeholders to ensure appropriate diagnostic investigations and reference testing.
- Ensuring compliance with SANAS accreditation requirements and driving continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintaining compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), SANAS accreditation standards, laboratory quality systems, and all relevant legislation.
- Introducing, validating, and implementing new diagnostic methodologies, laboratory instruments, and testing procedures.
- Providing expert interpretation of microbiological findings and clinical-pathological correlation to support patient management.
- Promoting laboratory excellence through adherence to quality assurance, laboratory safety, and best practice standards.
Minimum Requirements
- MBChB degree.
- MMed or FCPath in Microbiology.
- Current registration with the HPCSA as a Pathologist in Microbiology.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience as a Consultant Pathologist.
- Sound knowledge of laboratory safety procedures.
- Strong understanding of medical conditions, with particular emphasis on clinical-pathological correlation.
- Knowledge of principles of analytical methodology.
- Understanding of laboratory quality assurance processes.
- Practical laboratory diagnostic techniques relevant to microbiology.
