Position Summary:
The Shift Supervisor is responsible and accountable for optimum functioning of their shift, to ensure production targets are managed daily whilst generating minimum waste. They will oversee all functions including equipment, machinery, product, quality and staffing. They are accountable to the Production Manager.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
- Production outputs, waste, off-spec and absenteeism
- Manage full production force
- Ensuring minor breakdowns and faults are attended to and resolved quickly
- Ensuring all safety procedures are adhered to whilst on shift
- Staff management and supervision
Production and Shift Handover
- Fully understand production status and or requirements before taking over a shift – attend the shift change meetings on a daily basis.
- Ensure shift changes are systematically carried out daily and recorded as per check list procedure
- Understand the dynamics of Production planning and impact on lead times
- Ensure BOMS are issued in advance and changes are explained to the relevant personnel
- Ensure work in progress BOMS are issued to the small pack weighers in advance
- Ensure integrity of completed BOMS before returning to Production Manager
- Report output, waste, absenteeism, online, downtime, breakdown, grade change and clean- down hours on a daily basis
- Ensure daily Production targets are achieved in line with set performance targets for each grade
- Ensure daily waste is minimized and is in line with company performance targets below 1.5%
- Ensure proper and accurate production records are maintained and signed off daily
- Manage and control efforts as per procedures and work instructions
- Co-ordinate re-work and re-blends efforts with Logistics
- Co-ordinate location movement of Finished goods, Raw materials and waste from
Production and Logistics
- Maintain the integrity of company assets at all times , including materials
- Ensure short interval controls (SIC’s) are carried out for each Production run and duly signed off.
- Ensure total raw material input reasonably equates to total FG output as part of stock control efforts.
- Manage and control usage of consumables – degreaser, gloves, rags etc.
Maintenance Responsibilities
- Report minor and major breakdowns during the shift to Maintenance
- Complete the maintenance checklist on a daily basis with NCR comments duly signed off
- Issue maintenance tag to maintenance department for corrective action and or repairs
- Manage and control the calibration of all scales on site to ensure ongoing accuracy
- Recommend any changes that contribute to continuous improvement efforts
SHEQ Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance to OSHACT and legal requirements are followed
- Manage and control safety, health and environmental procedures
- Ensure strict lock out procedures and records are followed and maintained daily
- Maintain and manage any emergency response as part of risk management
- Ensure the site security procedures are in place and are not breached at all times
- Manage and control effective housekeeping objectives as per the procedures in place
- Ensure that all employees comply with the use of PPE in the work environment
- Ensure that the checklist is completed for checking (indicators, oil cooling units, chillers and compressors) on a daily basis
Human Resource Responsibilities
- Ensure accurate records of absenteeism and time keeping are maintained and duly signed off
- Co-ordinate and assist with skills development and training teams of employees
- Manage and control risk elements such as fire, and spillage etc. as per the procedure
- Manage and control the influences of alcohol and or drug on duty or reporting on as per procedure
- Manage incidents of IOD on duty and ensure all relevant procedures are followed and completed in the event of injury on duty
- Advise management on any potential risks to the safety, health, environment; or any threat to the company and where possible act to mitigate these risks
- Training and developing direct reports
- Active involvement in ensuring training, mentoring and cross-training is actively done in the plant
General
- Ensure records and documents are updated and effectively filled and maintained; complete all admin tasks related to running of the shift as required by management
- Recommend any changes that may contribute to continuous improvement efforts
- Team-player working as part of a wider team
- Demonstrate professional, ethical and leadership qualities through actions and behaviour.
- Promote team efforts to build a strong working relationship amongst staff.
- Promote leadership and training of all employees
- Improve processes and policies in support of organisational goals.
- Monitor adherence to rules, regulations and procedures
- Liaising with management as required
- Assist with ISO9001:2008 objectives in terms of training and implementation
- Assist with any project work required
Skills and Experience
- NQF3/4
- N3 Electrical and Mechanical
- Diploma in Supervisory Management
- ISO/IATF knowledge
- Introduction to PVC course training would be advantageous
- Experience in Quality control
- Low level maintenance skills and knowledge
- Plastics manufacturing
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing/production environment.
- A minimum of 5 years experience training and mentoring junior staff
- Hands on experience in solving technical problems and the ability to troubleshoot
- Hands on experience in resolving minor breakdowns
- Strong communicator, able to lead and manage teams and encourage high performance
- Basic IT literacy for reporting purposes and willingness to learn
- Well spoken and professional
- Ability to work in a team
- Ability to work with minimum supervision
- Ability to perform under pressure
Please note that the factory is in operation 24/7 and position works alternate day and night shifts on a 12 hour shift pattern with a compressed working week of 4 days on 2 days off.
