At Phungela Holdings we’re looking for a Business Unit Director to drive the growth of our Creative Communications practice — winning new business, building strategic partnerships, and leading a high-performing team delivering digitally-led, integrated communications for some of South Africa’s most visible brands.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Identify, nurture, and convert new business opportunities, lead pitches and proposals.
- Grow existing clients organically through new projects and services.
- Serve as senior client lead and strategic partner to senior marketing, brand, and communications stakeholders.
- Prepare and own cost estimates (CEs) and run commercial governance from CE through purchase order to invoicing.
- Own scopes of work, client KPIs, resourcing, budgets, and annual retainer negotiations.
- Manage team profitability, proactively correcting overand under-servicing.
- Mentor and grow the team; set the bar for creative, contemporary work anchored to client strategy.
- Represent Phungela at industry events, networking platforms, and business forums.

Technical Skills:
- Fluent across digital and social channels and the full
- PESO model (Paid, Earned, Shared, Owned).
- Strong financial and budget management; proficient in MS Office.
REQUIREMENTSQualifications:
- Tertiary qualification in PR, Marketing, or a related field (required).
Experience:
- Minimum 8 years in a PR, digital, or integrated communications agency, including senior client leadership.
- A strong commercial background is essential — Ces, budgets, profitability, and the financial health of client
- accounts.
- A track record of winning and growing business.
Soft Skills:

- Calm and decisive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- People-focused, emotionally intelligent, and meticulous with detail.
- Able to lead more than one client at a time, work on-site, and travel to clients.
