Job Purpose
The Quality Controller will play a critical role in ensuring that all products, processes, and services meet or exceed customer requirements, regulatory standards, and international best practices. This position combines hands-on quality control with welding coordination responsibilities, focusing on compliance with ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management) systems. The successful candidate will act as a key guardian of quality throughout the fabrication, welding, assembly, and erection processes.
Key Responsibilities
Quality Management & Compliance
- Implement, maintain, and continuously improve the company’s Integrated Management System (IMS) in line with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 standards.
- Conduct internal audits, process audits, and supplier audits to ensure ongoing compliance and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Manage document control, record-keeping, and traceability for all quality-related activities.
- Oversee non-conformance reporting (NCRs), root cause analysis (using tools such as 8D, Fishbone, or 5-Why), and corrective/preventive action implementation.
- Perform incoming, in-process, and final inspections on raw materials, fabricated components, welded assemblies, and finished products.
- Prepare and maintain quality documentation including Inspection Test Plans (ITPs), Quality Control Plans (QCPs), and Method Statements.
- Liaise with clients, third-party inspectors, and certification bodies during external audits and project reviews.
Welding Coordination & Technical Oversight
- Serve as the Welding Coordinator (or support the Responsible Welding Coordinator), ensuring compliance with relevant welding standards (e.g., ISO 3834, SANS 10162, AWS, or EN standards).
- Review and approve Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ).
- Monitor welding activities on the shop floor and project sites, including visual inspections, dimensional checks, and non-destructive testing (NDT) coordination.
- Ensure proper storage, handling, and traceability of welding consumables and filler materials.
- Investigate welding-related defects and implement corrective measures to minimise rework and improve productivity.
Data Book Compilation & Project Handover
- Compile, review, and maintain complete Project Data Books (Quality Dossiers) for internal and client handover. This includes:
- Material Test Certificates (MTCs) and traceability records.
- Welding documentation (WPS, PQR, WPQ, welder logs).
- Inspection and test reports (ITRs), NDT records, and heat treatment records.
- As-built drawings, dimensional control reports, and hydrostatic/pneumatic test certificates.
- Non-conformance close-out documentation and concession requests.
- Coating/painting inspection records and environmental compliance data.
- Ensure Data Books are accurate, well-organised, indexed, and submitted on time in both hard copy and electronic formats as per contract requirements.
- Liaise with clients, third-party inspectors, and certification authorities during final documentation reviews and project close-out.
Health, Safety & Environmental Integration
- Integrate quality control with occupational health & safety and environmental management requirements under the IMS.
- Participate in risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety inspections.
- Promote a culture of quality, safety, and environmental awareness among production teams.
- Ensure compliance with South African legislation (e.g., Occupational Health and Safety Act, National Environmental Management Act) and client-specific requirements.
Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Generate detailed quality reports, dashboards, and performance metrics for management review.
- Analyse quality data to identify trends and drive process improvements.
- Support project handover, as-built documentation, and client acceptance processes.
- Stay updated with industry standards, new technologies, and best practices in quality management and welding.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education & Certifications:
- National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Quality Management, Metallurgy, or a related field.
- Certified Lead Auditor or Internal Auditor for ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and/or ISO 45001 (highly advantageous).
- Welding Coordinator / International Welding Specialist (IWS) or equivalent qualification (e.g., IIW, SAIW) strongly preferred.
- Additional certifications in NDT (e.g., VT, PT, MT, UT) or quality tools (Six Sigma, Lean) will be an advantage.
Experience:
- Minimum 5–8 years’ relevant experience in a fabrication, steel construction, or engineering environment in South Africa.
- Proven hands-on experience implementing and maintaining ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 management systems.
- Demonstrated experience as a Welding Coordinator or in a senior welding inspection role.
- Familiarity with structural steel, pressure vessels, piping, or insulated panel fabrication is a strong plus.
Skills & Competencies:
- In-depth knowledge of quality management principles, welding codes, and inspection techniques.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and welding symbols.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel for data analysis) and quality management software.
- Excellent communication, report-writing, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to project sites when required.
- Knowledge of South African National Standards (SANS) and relevant industry regulations.
