Intermediate Quantity Surveyor – Mining
Haaks Quantity Surveyors is looking for an Intermediate Quantity Surveyor with mining sector experience to join our team in Pretoria, Gauteng. If you have around 3 years of QS experience and want to work across mining, industrial and commercial projects – both locally and internationally – we’d love to hear from you.
ABOUT HAAKS
Haaks Quantity Surveyors is a quantity surveying practice offering traditional quantity surveying and cost engineering services with a diverse, hands-on approach. Our service offering spans the commercial property, mining, building and civil sectors, with projects delivered across our African footprint – including South Africa, Zambia, the DRC, Mozambique, Burkina Faso and Somalia. We have extensive experience with TM3 mining contracts for various mining houses, and our motto is simple: angled to new solutions.
THE ROLE
As an Intermediate Quantity Surveyor, you will work hands-on across the full project lifecycle – from initiation through to close-out – with a strong focus on mining projects, supported by our broader commercial and industrial workload. You'll work closely with our directors and site teams to deliver accurate, reliable cost advice on projects both in South Africa and abroad.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The role covers general QS and cost consulting services across the full project life cycle, including but not limited to:
● Cost consulting, cost estimating, cost planning and cost control from project inception through to post-completion.
● Assisting in establishing client requirements and preparing feasibility studies, value estimation and whole life cycle costing.
● Advising on cost limits and budgets, and monitoring budgets throughout the project.
● Value determination, and risk management and calculation.
● Procurement advice and assistance during tendering procedures, including tender analysis and agreement of the contract sum.
● Preparing Bills of Quantities (BOQ) and tender documentation, including the final detailed BOQ.
● Commercial management and contract administration, including contracts negotiation.
● Preparing interim valuations and payment applications, and certifying and valuing construction work.
● Assessing the additional costs of design variations and other variations to the works.
● Assisting in dispute resolution and advising on contractual disputes.
● Preparation of the final account.
● Asset capitalisation and valuations for insurance purposes.
● Production of company pre-qualification questionnaire (PQQ) documentation in line with company policies.
● 5M management (Manpower, Machinery, Material, Money, Mainframe Time) on projects.
● General project management support, and assisting with TM3 mining contract administration and reporting.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
● Approximately 3 years' experience as a Quantity Surveyor, with demonstrable exposure to mining sector projects.
● A relevant tertiary qualification in Quantity Surveying (BSc/BTech/BSc Honours or equivalent).
● Working towards or holding professional registration with the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession (SACQSP).
● Practical knowledge of standard forms of contract such as JBCC, NEC, FIDIC and/or PROCSA.
● Strong measurement, cost planning and financial control skills, with high attention to detail.
● Comfortable working hands-on and on-site, including travel to remote or offsite project locations when required.
● A dynamic, solutions-driven attitude and strong communication skills.
