I've been with Ackermans for several years, and it used to be an incredible place to work. The culture was vibrant, the people were friendly, and the atmosphere was truly supportive. Back then, it felt like a real employer of choice—employees were happy, motivated, and eager to contribute.

Sadly, things have changed dramatically under new management. Employee-hostile decisions have led to high attrition, with turnover rates soaring. The company is now struggling to fill positions, largely because the pay no longer justifies full-time in-office work, and the head office is in a poor location.

The toxic culture is palpable. Promotions are no longer based on merit but on favoritism and being part of the "inner circle." Salaries are stagnant and far from competitive, while unrealistic targets for bonuses are being set. The company has turned to coercive practices, such as forcing employees to sign new contracts that extend the notice period to three months (up from one, as per the Employment Act). Those who refuse are essentially pushed out. To make matters worse, upper management has reserved petty perks like parking spots, while rank-and-file employees are denied basic requests like leave.

The impact on the remaining staff has been disheartening. Long-serving employees are expected to pick up the slack without any extra pay or overtime compensation, while the quality of new hires has drastically fallen. Many of the recent hires lack basic skills, which places even more pressure on the experienced employees to carry the workload.

While there are still some great people hanging on, many of the best have already left. Those who remain are trying their best to maintain team spirit, but it’s hard to stay positive when career growth is only available to those in management’s favor.

Ackermans may be suitable for new employees looking to gain experience, but I would advise them to move on as soon as they find a better opportunity. It’s heartbreaking to see how much this company has changed.

A typical day will be receiving an e-mail from head office informing the stuff about what  need to done on that particular day, then the store manager will task us in different departments of the store.

I have learned how to be productive in things that do not interest me an be able to do an excellent job. and be able to function as group.

The management that I 've work under were hard working people who had respect and passion for their work and people. they were great.

My co-workers were fun loving individuals even though sometimes we didn't see eye to eye on things, but they were professionals.

The hardest thing about the job was that it has little rewards if you not part of upper management regardless how hard you work.

The enjoyable put of it, is you get to meet lots of people everyday and interact with them or be able solve their queries or help them shop in the store.

Stress throughout the day because management that doesn't acknowledge employees efforts. I learned So much within a very short period of time but that was not enough. Ackermans Sales Management are the worst especially in the division I was in. We were all general workers with only few employees, serving a customer on the tills, customer service on the sales floor, office work as a manager which include everything office, unpacking of more than 10 boxes in a day, hanging, tagging of garments, putting sizing stickers on the hangers, steaming of clothes, merchandising, seasonal look that changes every season, housekeeping, cleaning floors, windows, stands or rails, finishing of tasks before 16:00, promotions, being the security of the store. For store managers it's even worse it can take me the whole day to explain...... 
It's a university on it's own I've learned a lot including to learn what people talk about when they talk about depression.

Free to grow and able to accomplish ones potential if the right people see it....lots of growth and opportunities.One of the best  companies to work for.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Deadline all at once,when you are given a task to excel it and then theres alot of others tasks as well to be done and this on a monthend.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Its a diverse company respects each and every single persons believe and values the company also have their own values and some of the staff values coincides with the company values so they go hand in hand.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A day doing admin and doing laybyes locations,checking cellular cabinet prices and stock levels and then goes to lunch and after lunch assist with unpacking and working out stock to the floor,when its an hour before closing we start cashing up and tidy up.

Working as a salesman at Ackermans was a solid and eye-opening experience. The environment was fast-paced, especially during promotions and month-end, which helped me learn how to stay focused under pressure. My main responsibilities included assisting customers, restocking merchandise, handling the till, and making sure the store was always neat and welcoming. The team dynamic was generally positive, and teamwork played a big role in getting through busy shifts. Management was firm but fair, with a strong focus on customer service and meeting daily targets. I gained valuable skills in communication, problem-solving, and dealing with different types of customers. The job also taught me discipline, time management, and the importance of presentation in retail. While standing for long hours could be tiring, the experience was rewarding and helped build confidence. Overall, Ackermans is a good place to gain retail experience and develop strong sales skills.

Early in the morning we say our little prayer before starting a long day ahead.team then disperse to take boxes and unpack clothes,tag them to avoid loss then assist with customer service. The daY may seem long but once started,time wil fly. At Ackermans i have learned to be patient as i am working with different people from different races. You also have to be a team leader and very flexible because The work needs to be pushed or else you will be adding another load to uesterdays one..the management at ackermans is trying to support us but they sometimes put alot of pressure for thr employees making them to despise coming to work.difficult as it is,you might find that you are alone in the department that is of high risk,you have to unpack and go to tellers to assist payers ,makin it difficult to cope

Since i have been working at Ackermans I have achieved alot of things such as, being able to work with money being able to deal with different customers at different occasions and communicating with different individuals. My co-workers and managers have been very helpful in a sense that they are not greedy with information and we mostly got along well with each other. the hardest part is sometimes having to deal with difficult customers and being given multiple tasks to do,but i take that as a step of being trained to be able to work under pressure. The most enjoyable part is when my customers compliment me about a great service they received from me because that helps me to push to do more and it makes me feel great knowing that i have excellently offered my service to our customers and that they appreciate what i do.

A typical work at Ackermans, in the morning we do gather and pray for a successful day and reaching goals, we get taught how to merchandise,  stockstaking and working at till point as a cashier, management is easy to talk to and help us strive for greatness, the workplace culture is to always ask if you don't understand, help your teammates and respect and care care for one another, no stealing and fighting, the hardest part was doing overtime on back to school but we learned to be more flexible the most enjoyable part was doing black Friday sales and festive week sales, getting to help new customers, opening new accounts and activating phones.

I joined Ackermans because I respected their name as a customer.  As a permanent shop assistant you would start a  day buy getting  a float to work in the till. You are also assigned a department to ensure its neat and fully  stocked and prices are up-to-date.  I didn't learn anything new. You just do as other's  do there was no training. The staff was ok to each other, management would give you a run around when you ask about salary or benefits. They will put pressure on you to ensure your department is in its best shape and be angry if you let a customer wait long for you.  Basically want you to be in 2 places at once. The only nice thing would be the free staff transp.Worst part the little monthly wage and rude customers  who think you were lazing around when you come back to the til.
